Blackhorn 209 Good GRIEF!

I rarely shoot my muzzleloaders any more but when I shoot a substitute powder it's 777. Normally when I shoot the M/L guns I just use the real stuff, it has always worked well for me. Since Missouri switched from a muzzleloader season to alternative weapons several years ago, I started using my specialty pistols.

Blackhorn must be a fickle pickle. I've never used it because a work acquaintance of mine missed the opportunity to take a buck of a lifetime a few years ago due to BH. He had recently got into hunting with an inline. Converted it over to BH by changing out the breach plug. But, apparently his primers were not "hot" enough to light the powder on that really cold day. He said he had shot tons of rounds at the range and loved the stuff! Spent a bunch of time beforehand getting ready for the upcoming season. Had zero problems with it the whole time. Here comes hunting season and he got on a NICE buck and click, pop, fizzzz, poooey went the gun. Said the bullet never made it to the deer. He was sooo disgusted at what happened. He talked to several different people and they had similar results in cold weather with Blackhorn and apparently you must have to use a certain magnum 209 primer. I don't remember the details. Either way. He now shoots Triple 7.

Actually Bob I never complained about the price!…. I complained about it not being a lb of powder. And then……. I said what I said because you made it sound like because I want to go hunting I enable Hodgdon to rape everyone!… I got maybe 15 years left to hunt, I’m certainly not going to let $81 stop me!… I don’t like there prices or anyone else’s prices but I’m not gonna stop living.

I couldn't agree more. I'm not gonna let an annoying cost stop me from shooting.

I have enough powder for the cartridges I shoot to last me, and I have projectiles also. If I was shooting a muzzleloader I would have the powder I need for it, with the slugs.

If it really gets down to it, non of us need very much for hunting. OTOH, I always one one ready to go for self defense. There was a great video that Garand Thumb did using a 50 cal slug on a human replication in a gel test....that would certainly stop an intruder!

I have enough 777 to start a small war and it’s my go to in my traditional muzzleloaders, I have a lot of black powder also just don’t like the cleanup so been using 777 mostly but my inlines shoot well on 777 but get a crud ring after 1st shot so it needs cleaned every shot. They say you do t get that problem with 209. I wouldn’t mind trying some specialty pistol hunting I have seen some pretty nice rigs all I have is a Thompson. What do you hunt with Bob?

I tried several of the BP replacements, you can have my share I will shoot real black.
Cracks me up to hear the whining on cleaning these. Wonder how many whiners there were in the 17-1800’s?
We have it easy today. I did some of the concoctions, no thanks. Give me some Balistol cut withH20 50/50 and it melts BP crud. Cleaned and done in 10-15 minutes.

So do we stop competing and hunting and shooting in general and hope it comes down ?… do we all ban together on a sacrid oath bound in blood not to fire another round until they charge what we want to pay?….

just saying if everyone stopped buying for about a month or so I believe the prices would drop some. I am not saying stop shooting. Don't you have enough components that you could shoot a month or so without buying?

Rebs,
I’ll be 60 in 4 days, my Dad was two months shy of 89 when he passed if I make it that long I should be able to shoot a hundred rounds per day every day until I die without running out so yes I can make it a month or so without buying anything, just for you and the shooting world I won’t buy anything gun related except from this site for one month I hope it will help

I got away from the crud ring by switching ignition systems from the 209 shotgun primer to a CCI 400 small rifle primer with a .25 ACP case for a carrier you have to buy or modify a breech plug but this pretty well fixes the crud ring problem in my experience. I do most of my hunting with the TC Contender in various calibers but I also have a couple of XP 100 pistols and a couple of TC Encore pistols that I will use occasionally. I really enjoy handgun hunting.

I can’t use that ignition system but did think about calling Jeff Hankins to build me one or possibly building one myself for plinking but game laws won’t let me hunt with it I always wanted a xp100 there really cool, I do have a 600 Mohawk I guess I could build one off it. Thank you for the suggestion on the ignition system

There are quite a few XP 100s still around, I was at a gunshow this weekend and saw several there for sale. The 600 would be pretty touchy with the feds.

look what happened with Budweiser when they went woke, they lost 30 million in sales and changer their attitude real quick

I believe the 600 Mohawk and xp100 is the exact same action but I could be wrong. But I like it the way it is so your right I need to just find a xp 100
My encore has a 7mm-08 barrel

Blackhorn 209 is certainly not priced for sitting at the bench and blazing away just for fun. But everyone I know who uses a 209 primed inline ML'er shoots a shot or three to check their zero before season and shoots once maybe twice at game then puts it away till next year. So a can of even 8oz. will last them years. Most hunters are just going to complain about spending $80 at time of purchase then forget about it.

When they started shipping 8oz containers instead of 10oz (and no price change, of course), they put out messaging that they were doing US a favor by being able to get the product out to more customers. What a joke.
