Stock help

I have an idea that I want to do to the Revolution 3-inch benchrest stock that I sell, and I thought I would do one for my fiance. She had expressed the desire for a wood stock. I showed her the pink one that I have and she really liked it.

Basically, I want to take the 3-in foreend and cut off about 3/4 in per side and round it off 3/4 inch radius. I figure what will be left is something that looks kind of like an old 40x forend.

I don't have the equipment to do this but I figure it's pretty straightforward for someone who had a table saw. So I was wondering if someone would think that would be a cool project to help me with.

1st thought, I'd sell the Revolution stock and get her a Boyd's.
2nd thought, DAsander wood rasp and coarse paper.
And last maybe hit up a couple small cabinet shops in your area and see if the can knock the heavy off for you to finish.

I want to show this to the people at Revolution because I want them to make it. They discontinued their tactical stock and I would like to replace it with this stock. I think it would be ideal for FTR.

All the way back or just at the first few inches or so?
Know anybody with a planer?? Mark it where you want to start, drop in and go to the end.
Or, chuck it up and go/pull to the end with a belt sander.
Laminates are pretty hard so a belt sander would make quick work of it but go easy cause :eek::eek:, or you'll end up with a sporter style fore end.

That’s not a lot to remove. Chuck it in a vise as a blade guide and use a hand saw followed by rasp. With some vigor that’s 30 minutes of work to get it roughed into shape.

just get a palm sander with varying degrees of sanding disc. it will come off perfect!!! I do this all the time with those POS Richard"s microfit stocks. it really doesn't take much time or effort. start with 40-60 grit and work thru the 80-120-240-320 papers. harbor freight has all the grits you need in cheap 5 packs. will take you about an hour maybe to do that to your liking
stan

here is a picture of one that i beveled the runners way back from the back of the stock to the middle, and worked on the ugly grip area as well. all with the palm sander in about an hour or so couldn't find the before pic but these are really clunky/bulky looking stocks - but only 220.00 to your door

I could do that. I would rather not eyeball it.

A table saw cuts a flat straight cut, square or at an angle as adjusted with the table tilt function. There is no straight surface on the forend that you have shown. If I were doing it and I have several table saws, a planer, a jointer, ect, I would use none of those. The radius could be done with a router but there is no square surface to run the bearing on. I would put it upside down on the mill table and use a bull nose bit with no bearing and cut the shape you show in one pass.

table saw first to take off bulk material, then a router to get a consistent roll on the sides, then a bench top belt sander to insure a nice straight side finish. piece of cake. but I have been a wood guy all my life.
