stock placement in rear bag

DBailey said:
Do you shoot with the end of the stock in the ears, or was that picture just to show how the stock sits down in the bag?

Yeah. the pic was just to show stock to bag fit.

The butt is generally about even with the back end of the bag.

The bag is a Protecktor Doctor filled with heavy sand.

I have seen Al shoot. I have had a THOUSAND conversations about EVERYTHING accuracy related with Al. Probably one of the best shooters on the planet, at least in the 1K game anyway. I now have an ST1000 and got a rear bag made just for it. My stock sits on the bottom of the bag also. I got the idea from AL. Watching him shoot.....walking up to his gun while it was on the line and actually looking at the stock/bag relationship. I don't have a fancy, shmancy camera lying around to take pictures , but I, too, have a couple pieces of wood lying around here somewhere that says that it might be ok to let your stock ride the bottom of the bag. You will just have to take my word on that!!! Mine probably isn't the best setup on the planet, as my gun sits HARD on the bottom with some side to side motion, but I like to DRIVE the gun during the string as far as windage and elevation. I may make some big adjustments with the knobs, but if i need to shoot fast I don't do much with the knobs. I just drive.

You can take that for what it's worth...I STILL consider myself a bit of a rookie, and am learning more and more every time I shoot.

Question for Alf, and 4xforfun...
Do you shoulder your rifles, and/or have your hand(s) and/or cheek on them when shooting?
Boyd

I shoot with contact at the shoulder, but I don't pin the gun against the stop like I do with my Hunter gun. Trigger hand rests on a small brick bag, with the thumb along side of the stock, not over it with a grip. Cheek is in light contact with the stock, but with the typical beard stubble, doesn't influence the shot. More or less "free recoil" from my PPC days, but with light contact at the shoulder. Contact probably increases when I get in a hurry.......... ;D

Thanks for the quick answer. I think that when we are discussing bags, i think that it is important to the discussion that degree of hold, be known. One more thing, how does your rifle balance? Have you added weight to the butt, etc. (As you can see, I am trying to go to school here.)

I know that I drive it, so yes...definate sholder contact. I don't think there is enough forward pressure to "pin" the gun against the front stop. I really don't know how I hold the gun with my trigger hand...I do know that during the sighter period I leave my thumb off of the gun, but during the record string when I am trying to pound them out there....who knows.....someone will need to watch or vidio me, beacuse I truly don't know what I do. Pretty pathetic... :-[ :-[
