Garmin Xero Down Range?

So I had a crazy thought: as the Xero is triggered by sound, then could you put it down range infront of and just off to the side of the target (shielded of course) and measure velocity at distance? I dont have mine yet to experiment, but am assuming the sonic crack could trigger the unit and register as the velocity before the muzzle blast arrived down range. Maybe use air rifle setting or? Not sure exactly how the various settings work on the unit.

Ok, then back to initial question! So theoretically it could pick up a 6mm 105gr bullet whizzing by around 1500 fps at 1000 yds?

From what I have read here, it needs to be more than 20 yards from the back stop to trigger it, so you would have to set it back that far from the target.

That could be done, easier yet. Set it up on a post mounted behind a plate and shoot by the plate with no immediate backstop/target other than a berm farther down range for safety, or in my case woods. Problem solved! I'll try it when I get mine.498C0349-833A-43B7-92E6-2047EB5200BC_1_201_a.jpeg

No theory to it, the unit will pick up arrows shot in front of it as well as bullets, BBs etc. You will have to get the bullet into the cone of the unit and it will read and display the velocity. Make sure you do so without hitting it or the results won't likely be pretty :)

Thus what I said about mounting the unit behind the plate!

I will be waiting to see what your find out and if it can be done, when ( as you say) you get yours and set it up. For sure keep is posted on your results.

Off topic reply… how do you know what may be in woods behind your target?

If you can position the unit so the bullet passes with 15” of it, it ought to work. Please report your results.

I'm sorry but how do you know it is triggered by sound?

Well then that will be a piece 'o cake. All I have to do is put the unit behind a 6in plate at 1000!
