I'm Almost 65 and Just Bought 2 Bicycles....am I Crazy?

When I grew up in an ocean town, there was a lifeguard who worked at a beach resort. He used to ride a bicycle on the beach. He was very fit and we all though he was in his late 40s early 50s maybe. Turned out he was in his late 60s! And he worked as the resort life guard until he was 75.

Here in Florida:
A man in his early 60's today was riding his bicycle and was ran into from the rear by a Sheriff Deputy driving a patrol car. The bicyclist was killed. The report on the radio said the officer was not injured.
I know there could definitely be more to the story.
Something like this makes you think all kinds of things.

After I retired (2015) and had both hips replaced I bought a bike for myself and my wife. I doubt her bike has 50 miles on it and most of them by my grandson. Up until 2-1/2 years ago I averaged 25 miles a day 5 days a week if was above freezing or not raining. 2-1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer, that put an end to riding. The chemotherapy really screwed with my stamina and balance. I gave both of my big motorcycles away to remove the temptation of hop and go. Long story short, chemo Is working great, my 3 kids bought me a 3 wheel bike and built a carrier for my pickup hitch. I won’t be caught dead riding on Hiways, public roads or city streets. We have a beautiful city/county/state bike-hike paved trail about 15 minutes away so I go there. The 3-wheeler just lacks something compared to my 2-wheeler crossover bike. Been playing golf again this past few months so maybe I’ll air up the tires on my 2-wheeler and give it another go. I’ve gained back over 25 pounds since the chemo and no biking. I’ll be 76 in a couple weeks, God willing, so yes! Get a bike, ride as much as you can but don’t overdo it. Start slow and short, let the young jocks by. Some day, if they’re lucky, they’ll get old and understand what being old is all about. Keep active, don’t overdo it, you aren’t in the Tour de France, just enjoying life. You never know what tomorrow will bring.

I’ve rode motorcycles, all my life until amputation of a leg took that away. Watching traffic and drivers now days I’m not to sure anything would be safe other than an Abrams

I ride now (69 yo). I love the view about 8 miles from my house but I hate the ride back as I have to take the same trail back with the same scenery and slightly uphill. I’ve been looking into getting an electric bike. Pedal out on the out and use electric on the way home. If I had electric for the trip home then I would take a different route back home hich has a few more hills. Two heart attacks (and stents) and four lower back surgeries so I don’t want to overdue things.

My Wife and I got bikes last year.

She has been riding off and on but I had a 55 year hiatus.

She's now 72 and I'm now 74.

We both love it.

Enjoy the rides, and many of them.
I forgot to add that I had hip replacement just before the lockdown (3 1/2 years ago) and never got physio.

The riding helps my hip.

I resigned from my employer of 7 years two weeks ago. I had been doing a 125 mile round trip commute most all of that time. I enjoyed my work as welding engineer (hot tap and pipeline intervention) but just got tired of the commute.

Anyhooo, I got a wild hair and decided to upgrade my physical health, as well as my wife's. So I got online and ordered two cruiser bicycles from "SixThreeZero". We usually do a 1-mile walk around the lake at our neighborhood here in Houston, but I thought the bikes might get us out more and with our two grandduaghters (8/9 yrs) as well. Any old farts on here that bike ride? I did ride bunches of Harley's all my life and never had a bad accident, so I'm OK on two wheels. I think I just need some encouragement to stay active and not become a couch potatoe.

Thanks all......curtis
Great job! Add some weight training as well. Muscle loss happens faster than you think.

Bicycles can be great for your health and enjoyment. However, roads built for cars are not that place. Here in Pa there is a law you must be at least 4 ft from a bike when you pass. Lots of secondary roads with lots of curves. No way can you really pass the bike folks. There are many who ride responsible and realize they don't own the road. But there are many who insist on riding 2 or 3 abreast, showing both their arrogance and stupidity. They have no insurance so when they ignore traffic rules and hit you, damage repair which could be in the thousands is on you. No registration fees but bike lanes add a million dollars a mile to highway building cost according what I have read. So have fun, ride off the roads. It's like people who walk out in from of cars even if they have the crosswalk. Even if the are correct, if there is a crash, they loose. Every time.

AND STAY OFF MY GRASS!!

Not crazy at all. On a slight tangent; I am negotiating with the wifey to buy a RAM TRX. There's just something compelling about a 4WD truck with over 700 horsepower.

I got a late start in life, but I'm closing in on 50K miles (road).
I have no idea how many miles I have ridden. I have worn out one mountain bike (hardtail) been riding road bikes for 60 years I am 75 now. Been riding mountain bikes since they called fat tired bikes mountain bikes. Have a road bike not ridden often mountain bike ridden 3-4 days a week now weather permitting. We live in Northern Utah almost Idaho.

Well, I’ll be 80 in a couple weeks and have been riding e-bikes for few years. I’ve had 2 total knee replacement’s and wouldn’t be riding at all without pedal assist. Went out this morning for a short 15 mile ride. Enjoy.
