600 Yard BR Gun - Easy Button?

jimmymac

Jim McGregor
I’m having an unlimited UBR gun built that can double as a 17 pound light gun should I decide to try my hand at some long range stuff. The gun will have a BAT MB action, 3” wide laminated tracker stock, Bix trigger and a NF 15-55 Comp scope.

I know next to nothing about the long range game since all I’ve shot is short range group and score. I’m looking for the easy button on caliber, barrel twist, bullet weight and type. I have several hundred pieces of Lapua 6BR brass so I’d like to take advantage of that. I want to break into this slowly and easily without jumping through too many hoops with initial brass prep. I’m not opposed to turning necks, but don’t want to struggle trying to turn the base cartridge into something else. With that said, I’d want this to be a competitive cartridge that will shoot small groups up close and at distance. I am thinking a straight 6BR or a 6BR Improved but I’m a sponge and not tied to anything. I’m looking to get educated. Thanks for your help.

Dasher 1x8 28 to 30 in tube. Tommy Mc

Send it to Alex Wheeler and let him do what he has had success with.

The gun is being built by someone else. When I asked Alex about the project a good while back he was busy and couldn’t take my work in. All I need is caliber recommendation, barrel twist and bullet info.

I should do some searches here I guess. Was hoping for the lazy man’s way out.

6BRA, Bartlein gain twist 8-7.75, Bart's, the new Roy's made by Alex Wheeler or Vapor Trails

That definitely was an Easy Button for me, waaaay easier to tune than 6Dasher IMO
Hope you have a decent stash of H4895 if you decide to go this route.

Yikes! I need powder.

Thanks for the input.

This is easy!
Straight 6BR No-Turn (.272 neck). 104-.112 freebore in that range.
1-8tw Krieger, Bartlein or Brux. HV contour 28 inches.
108 Berger 108BT’s are shooting as good as anything out there these days including customs are are the easiest bullet to tune I have ever used. Note: I am not sponsored by Berger! Lol
Varget works well and you can get it right now!
The straight 6BR shoots as good as any improved and is much easier to understand. I shot it for years!

Well there you have it !
I did choose a bra over dasher because of the simple fire forming. But it's just a br.

That is going to be a problem Jim. I don’t think I have anything suitable. I have bulk in H322, LT-30, LT-32, H4198 and small amounts of AA3100, IMR 4064 IMR 4350 and H4831.
I’m that case I would quickly order some Varget and follow Sam’s advice for at least one barrel, you’ll be very competitive.

I promise…

Thanks Jim. Appreciate the info. I had an offer from a member here to come and shoot one of his guns at a 600 yard match next weekend. If I can get clearance from my doctors, I’d love to give it a go.

The people on this forum are the best.

Just posted a copy of this on the gun room door as a guide for a future build. Firm believer in the K.I.S.S. principle especially when validated by successful examples of proven performance.

this man is great shooter and gives his best advice to all

have never met him but wish I had one of his old guns

start here and decide after a year or two if you wish to experiment

this advice will save you THOUSANDS of dollars, many hours of time and lots of headaches you don’t,ever need

If you were honest and I am sure you were in,your original, post and question the easy button is the Sam hall way

I to am from short range br and have gone to the worlds and many many regional and national short range br in the us of a

just do this and try the game for now

EASY TO SELL the rifle if you don’t enjoy the sport

and perhaps the solution is to KNOW you shot better or had less problems than long John silver sitting next to or across from you

sam hall advice all the way baby

maybe the explorers of the long range world beg to differ but you are not in contention for the top 5 places at the nationals just yet
small steps along the windy road to success, this is not a Mount Everest climb but a gentle somewhat long and windy road to the very little pot of gold

the rainbow is the journey, it is not too difficult to enjoy the go
