Home Defense

Next you need to know the local and state laws in your area. For example, do you live with 100 yards of a school? In some States if you do you may be violating the law if you have a gun in your house.

I will let the lawyers argue in court, I would rather be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Shotgun. One and done. Pistol training takes time. Lots of time. Most don't have that kind of time these days. Shooting a shotgun and training with one takes a fraction of that time.

I would not argue with your choice of a shotgun. I'm sure you are very confident with it. However, being a teacher, instructor, and coach my experience is the training time and dedication to become proficient with the battle shotgun is about the same as handgun and carbine. Also, 7 out of 10 shotgun students are done with it after completing a level I class. In comparison 7 out of 10 students continue on to higher level classes with the handgun, carbine, and/or rifle. I have all of them and if time permits will acquire the best for the challenge.

Go to a IDPA or USPSA Match at your local club, it's about $20 a match My skills are a thousand times better even after just a few matches Plus I found I like it! it's fun!

These are good sports, very popular. One would do well to remember they are games. Regardless they may be the only training available to many.

yes it is a game, But I would put my ability's up against a street thug any day, not to many John Wicks walking around trying to rob me, come on out next weekend and show us it's just a game, 12 targets 2 shots each and a steel fall over one shot, 25 shots in 13.5 seconds all on target center mass, and I'm Herman Munster with a gun. And I forgot, I'm shooting a 1911 .45 single stack so that's 4 reloads

and it's not like bullseye, only standard loads, no reduced loads

They will do.

Just an addendum to my previous post even though I have the dog I still keep a couple of 1911's in the house concealed from plain view.
Yes. Just to give an idea how big an English Mastiff is that’s, a full size refrigerator. So if someone makes it past him and his sister I do have a shotgun if there’s anything left to shoot at.

Cover My Six, I never questioned your shooting abilities. I was simply pointing out that Practical Pistol Shooting competition is but a small part of combat training and skills development.

Great idea. I've tried that with some friends. They just don't have the time. Wife either. It's got to be a priority and for most, it isn't.

I've trained for 45 years with multiple weapons in my LE career and personal time off duty. This is a perishable skill and one that needs to be trained in regularly at some point in a person's life. The more training it takes to perfect a skill, the more that skill needs to be used to maintain it. I agree I'd much rather use other weapons but remember, being trained on them and making that a priority makes it a better option. For the average person, a shotgun IMO IS the best option for home defense. I'd say there are zero John Wicks out there being bad actors. The ones out there doing harm to others are not skilled marksman but rather wreckless thugs with a death wish. Eventually that wish comes true

I would think an AR15 with a varmint or frangible style bullet would be best to reduce wall penetration. I read somewhere that #4 shot to be the smallest, for decent penetration on heavy clothesl
How about a 1911 loaded with CCI shot loads for the first three and something like hydroshok for the remaining?

In a pistol, I would stay with the same round and not mess around. Run a box or two through the gun to make sure it is reliable, and stick with that load.

I have never been able to get shot loads to reliably cycle in a semi-auto. Maybe not a bad idea for a revolver, but 9mm and .38 are commonly only #12 shot and even .45 ACP is only #9. Wouldn't want to get hit with either, but they sure aren't 'stoppers'.

a high velocity rifle bullet, and you think it won't penetrate dry wall? WOW!
