TAC-22 Ammo Review

The lot of TAC 22 I have shot .297" average for 5 groups of 5 today at 50 yards outdoors. I also shot 5 groups of 5 in our 100 yard tunnel and got .750" average. Great ammo for $4.30 a box. I'm also testing RWS R50 and it is better at 100 but about the same at 50!

I am a big fan of the TAC-22 ammo, but you need to be aware it is highly lot specific. The old black box bricks have shot terrifically out of my Anschutz, but the last few red bricks I bought directly from Norma were very disappointing. I will say that even the lower performance lots are still a great buy in that they shoot better than most other .22LR bulk ammo.

I was given a box of this stuff one day at the range, I shot it and was impressed. When I got home I ordered two bricks. That lot was 2 MOA at best in 4 rifles. I just sent the last 12 boxes from those bricks north with my son in law for tin can eradication. Like all other rimfire ammo it just depends on the lot.

Is this what shooters refer to as “black box”?

The black brick I had was not impressive. The red box stuff, I bought 7000 rounds of it, same lot. My buddy got 2000 rounds from me. He took 2nd place in a 100 yard shoot he shoots, using it. I like it and so does my Tikka T1X. I bought it due boltfluters suggestion. It was worth it, at the time $3.47 a box from Norma.

I have a case of TAC-22 in the red box and it shoots quite well considering the case was $300. Less than 1/2” at 50y.

I tested TAC-22 in the black box and it wasn’t as good.

So I’m keeping it around for practice on windy days when the practice is valuable and the ammo shouldn’t be.

I agree, finding accuracy varies from box to box not just lot numbers. But for the price its my choice over CCI standard. CCI groups larger and stays that way.

I did a recent rifle break in test where I used 10 brands of ammo and tracked the groups for 1000 rounds. Here are the results of the TAC and CCI for the first two sessions. These were 5 round groups. First test was the first 250 round session, the second test was the next 250. Subsequent tests mimicked the first two.

the total shots numbers for each session included barrel warmers and seasoning rounds and the percentages at the bottom were the group size changes from the first to the second session for the ammo brand

I believe this is what most refer to as black box

Yes, I agree that your depiction references Eley ammo. My question and photos depict a Tac 22 black box. The accompanying target with my Tac22 box photo depicts my experience with the ammo, outdoors, at a public range with three different shooters firing ten shot groups of Tac 22 consecutively at 50 yards using the same rifle. Does my photo depict black box Tac 22 ammo?

if this wasn’t a thread specifically about Norma Tac-22, black box and red box would be agreed to mean Eley Match and Tenex respectively. Here however it means the older Tac-22 in black boxes or newer Tac-22 in red boxes.

You have a point there. I say that because my Tac 22 black box was newer and shot poorly in my Tikka T1X. However my buddy's older Tac 22 black box shot better in his Savage.

I have several Vudoo repeaters with Krieger barrels that I've chambered with a PTG EPS reamer - if one of them likes a good lot of SK Std+, Rifle Match, or LR Match, the others will shoot well with that lot also. And they all seem to shoot fairly mediocre groups with any of the Norma TAC-22 or Match ammo.

But recently purchased Anschutz rifles - fairly new 1712 with newer style safety lever, and much older Savage-Anschutz 54 sporter with wing safety - both seem to handle even the worst lot of TAC-22 better than any of my custom barreled rifles - and they both shoot pretty decent 50yd groups with one of the two lots of Norma Match I have. I've not seen a reamer print that depicts what Anschutz uses, nor do I have any idea of the difference between the newer 1712's chamber vs the old Savage-Anschutz one. But given that ANA uses RWS ammo in the Anschutz rifles they test, it makes me wonder what it is about the Norma (re-branded RWS) that these two rifles prefer over the SK ammo I've shot through them?

The “Black Box” TAC 22 shoots well ( high X count @ 50, almost X ring @ 100 Smallbore) in my Lilja barreled prone rifle, BUT is much dirtier than the Eley Match I shoot in matches. After a few hundred rounds, if you don’t break out the bronze brush, the accuracy goes to pot. DAMHIK.

not trying to derail things, just an FYI
The maximum you can purchase is 10. And shipping for 10 to SC is $16.22. That makes them actually $4.61 a box for me.
