1st Time Hand Stippling

Been meaning to do this for some time but finally got started with Stippling my 10/22 stock. Rounding the corner on the whole project but I wanted several spots stippled so I had at it the other day. Still need to toss a final coat of oil over the stipple. This was my fist attempt at stippling. How did I do?

It's not a natural feeling going after a $500 stock for me.

Looks very nice. Stippling wood with a finish like that is tough. An old toothbrush with and a thin oil finish is a nice way to do stippling. Did you make your own punch?

Your punch looks like a 12d common nail!! What is it really? Ever try a micro sized air chisel??

Thanks, found the punch in a box labeled "16D finish" (might be a 12) with about 200 others...... it's a nail. I tried several sizes and blunted several before finding that a sharp nail out of the box had the finish I liked best.

Got the grip panel finished today. Took way too long. Couple more hours and I'll get the last two finished.

The stippling on grip is very, very eye catching. Impressive to say the least.
I have three stocks to either checker or stipple or something. I have thought of using a dremel or an mini airscribe to do stippling.

I've always wanted to start checkering, but haven't done anything yet. Closest I've come is cutting the boarder lines for this stock. I have some checkering tools but would want to invest in some new cutters before I actually tried to make something nice. I have been reading up quite a bit on it lately too.

Excellent job. I like your choice of tools, but I don't think that would work for me to try to hold something so small in diameter, I believe I will have to make a bigger diameter handle and put the finish nail into the end of the handle. My hands are so beat up there is no way I can hold a finish nail even if it is a 16D. You have sent me in the right direction and I thank you for your help. I will experiment on this today.

Well, I'll finish those other panels one day, but here's basically the finished product. This started life as my first 22 my dad bought me when I was 11. When I was a teenager I bought a cheap butler creek stock and a "carbon fiber" ie. Plastic wrapped target barrel.

One day about a year ago figured I should "fix it up" a little so my kids can shoot it and have fun. Didn't want to dump a ton of money into it so picked up a Green mountain blank, chambered it with a bentz reamer, richards microfit AAA Claro walnut stock, area 419 arca rail, tuned the factory trigger, and Cerakoted the barrel. 20 MOA rail Hawkins rings, and a Athlon Talos scope. Also dressed the bolt face on the surface grinder to fix headspace. I haven't had much time to shoot groups and test ammo. Shot a 0.6" 5 shot group with some cheap old federal high velocity this afternoon @100.

Turned out OK.

FWIW - checkering is fun and usually turns out great. The major difference imo is that checkering mistakes are easier to see compared to stippling.
Do you remember what model/style Richards stock you purchased? That stock finish is really nice.

It's the Varmint Master style w/o the vents. It's an oil finish. I originally ordered a boyds, but it wasn't what I expected and had some issues so I sent it back. This was way more work, but worth it IMO. I had to open up the palm area a little bit to fit my hand better.

I also milled the bottom of the forearm parallel to the top so I could mount the arca rail.
