Hart blanks vs

Serious question, are any Hawk Hill barrels showing up in the winners list?
Haven't seen any that I recall. I know Boyer was trying them before he quit shooting. He spoke highly of them but I don't believe he ever used one in competition.

Looking at the NBRSA magazine short range group matches 2023... At 2 big matches, the Cactus and the Shamrock, it was all Bartlein and Kreiger, with a couple of HWP's.

Bottom line...the barrel you buy is determined by end use.

I have harts on my PD rifles but not on my competition rifles.

There is a lot of monkey see, monkey do in this sport. If brand X barrel happens to win, there will be a number of brand X barrels show up at following matches. And, top tier shooters often go to the trouble of trying several barrels and selecting the best one.

For many of us who are just shooters, we often look at equipment lists and use that as a guide, and hope the list is truthful. How many times have we seen equipment list showing powder charge weight, but at the same time we know shooters will change their charge weight during a match.

Correct Jayplace. And sometimes the registration forms are sent in months ahead. The last few years it seems to me Bartleins are favored out east and Kreigers are favored out west. Cut rifled.

A well known gunsmith has Hart barrels as an option for the rifles he assemble.
I don't believe I would indicate if they were of a lower quality than the those best known.
Personally, I don't have the experience to comment.

As far as the Hart barrel thing, Boyer started out using them and then when Hart sold the company the quality he said when down and he went to Shilens. Then the same thing happened to the Shilens and he went to Krieger then Bartlein. When I bought all 198 barrels from him he did have about a dozen Hawk Hills and he liked them and his notes on each barrel was very positive for almost everyone but his records indicated that he hadn't used any of them in a match. Most of his barrels were Bartleins only because he was getting so many a year for free. I asked him if you had to buy one brand of barrel what would you buy and he said a Krieger. I know in IBS short range group Bartlein is the most used brand followed closely by Krieger. You mostly see the top shooters use those two brands. In IBS short range score the most popular brand by far is Krieger followed by Brux. I have about 100 barrels that I have bought over the last 12 years from Rock Creek, Bartlein, Hawk Hill, Hart, Shilen, Douglas, Broughton, Lederer, ABC, Lilja, Krieger, Brux, Schneider, Spencer, Muller and Kostyshyn, and I can honestly say in a 30 caliber the Kriegers have been the winningest barrels for me. I do have one Hart 16 twist that has won me a decent amount of wood including a National 200 yard agg win but I only use it in my 30x47 at 2 and 300 yards and meters. I know Allie the year before he passed away he bought a Hart 17 twist and he was winning quite a few matches with it. It was a killer barrel. Most companies make some pretty good barrels and those same companies have made some real crap and it's not their fault. They are at the mercy of the steel that they buy, Every barrel company that I know has gotten bad batches of steel. But that's just the way it is. It's a roll of the dice when these barrel companies buy steel and it's a roll of the dice that you'll either get a piece of crap, a mediocre one a good one or if your super lucky a hummer.

Hawk hill barrels have been doing really well in the 600 and 1000 yard BR matches. With some national wins.

Equipment lists are interesting but...some competitors fib their answers; some are following the leaders; some good shooters get free barrels or heavy discounts. So, they shoot the freebies. Wouldn’t you? I would.

I had a great Hart 1-14 on my first 30 br and have a very good 6mm chambered in ppc for the same action. Good barrels are where you find them. All makers mentioned make excellent products imo. Some barrels fron any one of them turn out to be killers.

When I first started shooting Short Range Benchrest in the ‘90’s. Hart was one of the “go to” barrels.

Sometime around 1998 I had a Hart 6PPC barrel that fouled really bad, and would not shoot. I called Hart and their response was pretty rude and condescending. In short, their attitude was there was no use in me sending it to them because they were positive there was nothing wrong with it.

Fine.

I switched over to Cut Rifled Barrels, that being Krieger. When Bartlien appeared on the scene, I also started to use them.

I have won my share of aggregates through the years, however, none have bern with a Hart.

I had the same thing in '98 with a ppc barrel and was told I didn't know how to clean it. I sent it back and PJ relapped it and that fixed it. I never bought another one. Roger Schuppe

Excellent!

Some barrel makers have taken a hard line on buyer complaints about their barrels, and I can understand why. With everything that can go wrong after a new barrel is broken in, from loose scope bases or rings, to a bad scope, no flags, poor wind reading capability, wrong bullet/powder combo, etc., etc. I guess it should be expected. However, some barrel makers are more in-tune with their buyers, their reputation, etc. and are willing to listen and help out. If you have been a long time benchrest competitor you know which category most of the makers fall into. May be one of the reasons Krieger's are so popular??

That's actually 7 words. I have an issue when people say that. It seems like a lazy way to justify your own personal purchase. Just because someone hasent used that specific barrel doesn't mean it's not top tier. Why aren't we taking into account the reloads and wind reading of competitors? Literally dozens of other factors. Not saying that a green mountain blank is going to outshoot a bart, but I don't think looking at an equipment list of someone with a different skill level than me is going to help. I can't put on Jordans shoes and dunk. I can't pick up tiger woods clubs and golf.
Well said!
