Depression is a serious issue; Robin Williams and many other very talented, successful people have wrestled with lifelong torment and reached their limit.
Not judging them, as it has reared its ugly head in my Family for generations. My Grandfather (WWII Veteran), Father (Vietnam Vet and 26 yrs Heavy Armor), Uncle (Vietnam Vet) Infantry 3 years, Brother (Iraq Vet-3 Tours and 23 yrs Service) all had after action issues. Dad finally got the help he needed but well over a decade after retirement. My Brother was pre-emptive in his approach as he recognized the behaviors/feelings we witnessed growing up and of those in his peer group from his own group of War Fighters.
Likewise, in my 20 years as an LEO, both Military and Civilian, I was proactive in trying to maintain my own mental well being in the face of constant stress and often saddening cruelty of man(and woman) against their fellow man. I took specialized training to become a Mental Health Security Specialist to aid in serving Mental Inquest Warrants. The Dept noted a disturbing trend of increasing violent ends to serving such warrants and implemented a program to have at least one Ofc. in each District/Shift to aid in such cases. Now, I believe it is part of the curriculum at the Academy level.
