Question about benchrest actions

All of our rifles are large tenon no matter what thread size.
Todd
Hi Todd, I think you are talking about the chamber end of the barrel. do you leave them as they came or do you turn them down?
I prefer larger diameter at the chamber end and have them turned down to about 1.00 before chambering.

They are left at 1.200. Tenon threads are cut before chamber. We like the added bearing surface at the connection. Tad will slug after all machining \ chambering and if necessary will post chamber lap.

Thanks Todd. never thought about leaving them for more contact surface. interesting

you talked to the wrong person.. Jason Frymier is the person you should have talked to..
Sir, it has nothing to do with the person that I talked to, just never getting a good answer on delivery and about other folks never knowing when they would get their product.
Yes, I had a Turbo that I bought from Flash in the mid to late 1990s.

Are you guys talking about actions that have a tenon size of 1.2 inches or greater? A pic would really help.

Most RFBR actions (Turbos, 10Xs, 2500s, and Nitros) have a .750 tenon size with 16 per inch threads. They are turned down to .743 before threading. Then the chamber is cut.

If you are using a blank that has the 1.2 or greater diameter you still have to turn down the tenon.

I'm calling the threaded portion the tenon. If you see it as something different, please advise.

Out of pure curiosity, is there a reason you guys feel bearing surface with a std .900”-910” barrel is somehow less than adequate given the huge popularity of that approach?
Strikes many as too easy to potentially run into interior dimensional issues.
Myself….simply curious.

If I read right, I believe he’s talking about a big bbl step down even with a 3/4” tenon.
I know Gorham has done some this way as well…..one for sale now on RA Built on a 10X.

TRSR8 you read it right. We use R barrels on all of our rifles. 1.200 to .850 being my favorite.
Mr. Harper you are correct also. 1.200 to .750 threads if that's the action we are using.

Todd,

Thanks for the clarification.

The pics below show a straight contour barrel vs an RO contour barrel.

I think we are on the same page. I was lost there for a while.

Ross taper. I assume Ross is the person that introduced this barrel profile. The blank comes 1.200 for 4 inches and then .850\.900\.920 straight the rest of the length.

I just added that same front spider to my lathe. More manageable than a large 4 jaw.

I'm using a spider on both ends right now. My Heavy 10 allows me to go through the headstock.

I like it much better than using centers.
I'm doing the same on a 14-40. It works for long barrels. Short barrels would be a problem. I like that lathe. Looks like you could do about any length barrel. What is it?

South Bend heavy 10. Old but is one of the best lathes for gunsmith work.

This one has been rebuilt and holds a really good zero.
