School me on custom rimfire actions

How about the panels opinions on an 10x X-III?
I have an opportunity to pic one up from a hall of fame shooter and what little I've read seems to positive.

Well here is a great example.
Myself, I shoot both the 2 lug and the 3 lug however neither one of which as it came from the maker, the 3 lug having extensive mods.
The 2 lug had fair amount done to the the bolt that Gordon Eck said was absolutely required and I trust him absolutely. The gun was built with a bbl supplied by me and has been a great shooter.
The 3 lug was bought with few rounds andbuilt by Mark Penrod with an extensively modified bolt, shoots very well.
I have no experience/opinions on the potential of a box stock version but again, complete confidence in the guys that built both my guns.
I shoot other 10 1/2lb. guns as well as sporters but these 2 are pretty damn good IMHO.
If pressed, I would tell you these actions have great potential but require blueprinting and you had better make damn sure it is done by somebody with required skillset.

Some of the particulars are:

"Jewel trigger, TM stock bedded by Tom Meredith, 9 or 10 K rounds through a Shilen ratchet barrel, smithed with a very tight barrel. Comes with bore guide"

I'm thinking that this would be quite the starter rifle for a beginner in this discipline, does the majority agree?

Shilen ratchets do not come in a “ very tight” variety.
I’d be very surprised if it is smaller than .2180” or .2175” in the bore.
Buying from a HOF guy is less important than who made it, and when.

As in most of the BR shooting sports, the shooter is one of the most important components of the sport. There are 5-7 ARA/PSL shooters that consistently win most of the shoots. Same as CF....how good are your wind reading & bench set up skills?

I consider myself an above average shot. I've been competing benchrest the last 2 years at 1000 & 600. Working on my wind reading and figured that ARA matches will help with that. Did manage to shoot the highest 1000yd target of the season at our range last year, a 3.026" 50-3x. All this with a bone stock Savage f-class in 6br wearing a $300 scope on a homemade rest.20180317_132732.jpg

I have no idea if my xiii had "work done"
Can't imagine what that actually means.

I think the builder's reputation is allot.
If I were looking, the add posted would get my attention and if priced right for me I'd get it. Be prepared to rebarrel if ya can't get it to shoot.
They don't sale the best they have. Barrels are the culprit most of the time when all else is reputable.

Basic stuff:

Most common custom actions- Turbo (two and three lug), 10x (two and three lug), Holeshot Arms (Jerry Stiller) (2500x (two lug), Trident (three lug), Hall. Some others you'll run into are the Lonestar (made by Stiller), Falcon (made by Leonard Baity), Swindlehurst, Time, etc. But mostly it's Turbo, 10x or the 2500x and Trident. Lots of Hall actions are out there and being used also.

Jerry Stiller of Holeshot Arms (Texas) makes the 2500x, Trident and Lonestar. Anthony DiOrio (Virginia) makes the Turbo, Lonnie (can't remember his last name) from PA makes the 10x, Alan Hall makes the Hall (easy to figure that one out eh?), Leonard Baity (NC) makes the Falcon, etc etc...

Main differences
PAS (Pin Around Spring) Ignition-Turbo, 10x
SAP (Spring around Pin) Ignition- 2500x, Trident (three lug version of 2500x), Falcon,, etc

What it means? Calfee likes the PAS ignition. Some say it doesn't matter, some say it does. I don't know. Same with the 6 vs 12 O'clock firing pin. Most popular in the customs, personally not sure it matters though.

Bix and FF triggers are the more popular triggers used on these. Jewel triggers are still used by quite a lot of shooters, but most of the big name shooters use the Bix or FF triggers anymore.

Why these customs? Closer tolerances than factory actions. Not to say factory actions can't win, they can. Remington 40x, Win 52D, Suhl, Anschutz are great actions. Advantage of the Suhl is that the factory trigger rivals any of the aftermarket custom triggers. Most use Bix or Jewel triggers on the 40x. Anschutz of course has their own trigger, as does Win 52.

But in general, custom actions should have closer tolerances than factory actions. Not to say custom actions don't need work when you get them. Turbo and 10x can be rough as a cob when new. Either requires knowledge on the owners part, or a gunsmith familiar with them to sort out. Not to say they won't shoot when new, but there's a lot that can and should be done to get them "right". Personally feel, the one action that is the most user friendly is the 2500x or Trident. More of a stick on a stock, stick on a trigger and barrel and away you go. Very well made actions.

Known gunsmiths were listed earlier. Several others do very good work with any of these actions. Go with who you're comfortable with. Gorham and Eck are two of the more commonly used. Think Eck only works on the 2500x/Tridents anymore. You'd have to ask. Penrod, Langley, Blue all work on any of these actions. I'm more familiar with Don Blue so he does mine. Good friend and close so easy choice to make. Langley does some great work as I shoot against a lot of his guns and they do shoot well.

Factory vs Custom...Personally have owned Win 52's, 40x's, Anschutz, Suhl, etc. Have shot most of these in matches and done pretty well. Even did very well with a lowly Kimber 82G in matches. As to custom actions, have owned Turbo, Falcon and Trident. Never really shot my Turbo much as it wasn't quite what I expected. Falcon was a struggle until I learned what makes these things tic. Worked great then. The Trident is the one that blew me away. From the start it has been everything I think a custom action should be. But again, this is all from a personal perspective.

In a nutshell it's ignition, barrel and ammo. You get ahead of those you're going to be ok. The other stuff has to work well together, but any of these actions can and have won. Of course, personal ability plays a part I suppose:)

May have missed something but in general this should help get you started. Good luck

Kenny
How is Vudoo’s V22 S shapping up?

Either buy a 2 lug turbo or a 2500x...you are gaining absolutely nothing from a 3 lug action in both of these actions!
While I have barley scratched the surface on precision RFBR IMO in boils down to preference. Kinda like Chevy, Ford/ Mustang/Corvette. Both are mighty fine and more than capable but in the right hands it can be marginal. It certainly appears in RFBR ignition, ammo and barrel are far more important. If the action is 3 lug vs 2 lug and if the ignition is spot on and consistent who cares if its 3 or 2 lug. That’s my, from my limited knowledge/ perspective.

Until vudoo starts winning matches...most aren't going to break from the standard
I have to agree, they need to be shot at RFBR matches. but they won't be accepted completely until one of the top 5 shooters in the country uses one and wins a big national event and I just don't see that happening anytime soon.

I agree.. I wouldn’t stop shooting something that’s proven to me either..but like I said above..in the right hands it’s gonna do really good plus it kinda seems like more folks are getting interested in RF BR and that’s a good thing for the sport and competition.

I know Ivan Wells is pissed at people's in rfbr right now....but if he's wanting to push these actions he needs to show up in GA next month and SHOOT! He's more than capable of a shooter

I personally don’t know Mr. Wells but from my understanding from talking to others he’s more than capable and I would bet if the man has the time and has a V22ss that’s shooting to his liking he will probably be there..I would like to see how him and his V22ss performs also.

As has been said above, the number of lugs isn't relevant to much and doesn't set one action apart from the other. I did a three lug simply because I was asked to do a three lug and have other plans as it relates to a three lug over a two. The challenge though was to do a three lug with a lighter bolt lift than a two and there are other things that sets the V-22S apart.
