Which with a 20 Br is not a ton!
The B.C of the 20 cal. 55 is were it shines, not that B.C is everything but in this case its a laser. I think you would have to get up to the 90 in a 22 cal to get close.Well if a 20 BRAI would be better why not 22 BRAI for heavier bullet and longer range?
The OP said he wanted to stick with the BR case though.
What barrels are you running and what are the twist?I “had” a 22BR… limited yardage with any bullet-… well, I did shoot a bunch of varmints Fromm 100yds-300yds..Seems the 53gr Vmax was the best bullet I found in mine…LIMITED case capacity for competition, hence the 22DASHER set a record, by James Phillips..
My 20BRAI is a different animal.
The 55gr Berger bullets running 3650-3750fps, is a laser.
I’ve even cared it to 600YD competition and whooped some 6mm butt.!!! It agg a 1.98” in LG on 4 targets.
Stan Taylor & His boss set some Range records w/ a 20 Dasher….shooting there 56gr bullets
VolDoc carried his SAVAGE 20BR with 55gr Berger, to shoot prairie dogs out west, I believe it was close to 1100yds with a kill, memory slips me…
Terry Balding shoots his in every competition, and hunting adventures he goes on..
I’ve yet to set a barrel back, and clean after 22 to 25rds..
those are my thoughts.. I think the 20Dasher is over bore, the 20BR hitting the sweet spot, 20BRAI- best of both…
22BR, not ever again…..
This just my experience….
I've had several 20BR's through the years. All 1:9 twist Bartlein or Kriegers HV on custom actions set-up for the Berger 55 gr. They are easy to tune and very accurate at the longer ranges. Most barrels last 900-1000 rds. Had one that went 1500 rds.I've decided to go with a 20BR . I have had a couple Dashers, several 6BRs and a couple 22BRs so why not try a 20 ?
I wonder how those 40's would hold up in a 9 twist?A 20BR with the BIB 40 gr. bullet is pretty impressive. A .290 B.C. @ 4,000 fps is almost like cheating. Adjust to your probable velocity and run the numbers on drop over your likely shooting distance and compare that to the 55's before committing. The 11 twist barrels are perfect for anything but the 55's.
Good shootin' -Al
I did some testing last week with the 40BIBI wonder how those 40's would hold up in a 9 twist?
I tested some 46 gr bullets in my 9 tw 20BRA at 4050 and they did fine. I didn't even run it up pressure to see if there was a higher node just shot really well there and stopped.
Emma Creek GunworksWoodchk , who built your stock ? Very nice looking SP .
Absolutely gorgeous SP in a great cartridge.Emma Creek Gunworks
I put together a custom 22 Dasher and it is amazing. I cannot say enough good things about the new Berger 85.5 gr Hybrid Target!!! There is alot of work in making brass from the Lapua 6 BR brass however, I bought a box of Alpha 6 Dasher brass that I will neck down and turn.I've had a XP for sale for a while with very little interest so I'm considering a rebarrel to something else I would enjoy shooting. My favorite XP I have owned was a 22BR slow twist shooting 52 gr bullets. My thoughts now is a fast twist 22 BR or 20BR to have a little more range than the 52's had . Any thoughts on these two in an XP platform will be appreciated.
