My lovely bride is going through “the change”…. I have the blessing of being able to fall asleep almost anywhere when tired. She… not so much.
She has back, breathing, hot/cold flash, you name it problems…
She is looking at getting us a Sleep Number mattress in hopes to find some relief.
The only real “reviews” you can get are on their web sight.
Anyone ever go that route? Good, bad, ugly?
I've had my Sleep Number bed for 20 years now and love it (yes, just the one bed). I haven't got out of bed a single time with an aching back in that period. It's the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on (have a very low number setting).
Before I got this mattress I could no longer sleep on my stomach as I had when young and would get up, no matter how I slept, with aching back or neck or something. My wife always slept on her back and never really had any such issues. She suggest we get a firm mattress, so upon doing so I bought a Posturepedic and for the next year just it didn't work out (my aches and pains actually worse). So, back to shopping for a mattress. When I came across a Sleep Number in the store, the sales person had me lie on it with my eyes closed while she changed the number/pressure for the matters. It felt great and was surprised at how low a number it was to feel so comfortable. I bought it and it was mailed to my house and the mattress assembly was easy enough. That first night on the mattress I went to sleep on my back the whole night and slept like I haven't in a very long time and the best thing was . . . when I got out of bed, I had absolutely no aches or pains. And it's been that way ever since, except that I sleep on my side as I still not very good an going to sleep on my back.
The sleep number I use is 22, which means it really sags and when I sit on my side I almost bottom out. But when I lay on it, there's no bottoming out and I get a full head to toe support along the contour of my body. My wife, on the other side, uses a number of 45 and finds that's what she like and is very comfortable with it. BTW: the Sleep Number bed I've got is one of their cheep ones (though, not all that cheep).
Because there is such a difference is settings, the foam middle ridge that separates the two sides, my wife doesn't like to roll off from that area from her side into my "pit". So, sleeping close together is more challenging with this difference in mattress settings than other mattresses. The only thing that's a bit of an annoyance is when making the bed, the top of the bed is not flat all the way across due to some sagging from my "pit" setting. . . making it look like just an old worn out mattress. But, the benefit of how it feels outweighs how I feel about its looks. Addendum: the one big negative for my mattress is that when one of us moves, the other can easily feel it, but I hear the newer ones (especially the thicker and more expensive ones don't have that issue.
Recently I bought a Casper Hybrid (soft) to put in our guest room and when I lay on it, it actually feel very good and my wife agrees. But, I'm not giving up what has worked for me over the last 20 years.
I feel what mattress one selects should largely depend on just how one sleeps on mattresses (e.g. side sleeper, back sleeper and size of the sleeper). I feel Consumer Report's rates do a good job of helping make a decision. So, check this out:
