Strange AR. Has anybody seen this?

I have one that is very close, but the handguard is not two different styles it is the same as the front section of that one all the way back to the magazine well. Mine is a generic lower with a DPMS varmenter upper. Mine shoots 69 SMKs over Win 748 pretty well but the barrel on mine may be getting long in the tooth.

The ribbed hand guard looks like it’s a hand guard for a M203, 40mm grenade launcher. The extension at the front is an old style AR free float aluminum forearm. I would like too see more pictures as to how it was put together.

I was looking for handguards the other day, and had to look long and hard to find a free float handguard that wasn't a cheese grater. The one I have coming is kinda like the old style as you call them. How in the world would you get one of the new key mod or picatiiny hand guards to work at all with a front rest with a bag?

As soon as I get my hands on it, I’ll be able to figure it out. He wants to be able to mount a suppressor on it. Initially, I’m thinking it would be easiest to buy a new upper. I’m not an AR mechanic so I’m hesitant. I read that cans can be persnickety and might need an adjustable gas block.

Stupid question... Is there a barrel in it?
Years ago at his ranch, he handed it to me and I shot a few rounds. I didn’t like how heavy it was, didn’t look closely at it and handed it back. He said a guy built it for him. Now, I’m very curious to see what it is and ask him “why”.
I have a Stag with a straight tube handguard and a heavy “bull barrel”. His gun is just as heavy and I’d like to know why.

Front half looks like a DPMS I had. It had a 26 inch heavy barrel, .920 forward of the gas block, whole rifle weighed 13 pounds with lead in the butt. It was my NRA HP rifle so weight was good. You might have a full 1.0 under the tube.

Get ahold of the gunsmith that your cousin had put it together for him and ask him about it. The smith should be able to answer all your guestions.

DocBII,

I used to hang a heavy 2 D-cell battery flashlight off the front end of an AR fo with zip connectors for use in night matches. It kept front recoil down and allowed for faster followups. .

This. Looks like an inspired-by MP5-SD:

Big tube, grooved handguard around that.

There are even extra-long, faux-suppressor versions of that to get 16" of barrel (this is a .22 clone)
