Savage action

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I have built 2 Savage actions into BR guns and it isn't worth it when you consider what you spend to be competitive.
Just one example Model 12 single shot action $450, T&T'd $179, 2oz. trigger $300, scope bases and rings $175, barrel $425 (chambered and threaded for shoulder install, scope $1100 (Leupold 45x), Mcmillan stock $600. Around $3300 total.
Stolle "Kodiak" in McMillan stock, scope 6x, barrel Krieger, all in turnkey condition bought on this site $2000, with brass and bullets. Absolutely no comparison in function.
Have another Kodiak being built right now that will be around 2k total without scope. Then I will probably sell the Savages at a BIG loss.
My opinion buy or build once, cry once.
I have 4-5 Savages for hunting and plinking and will never sell them.

What Savage action ? I used a #12 short action ,Broughton barrel . and a Rifle Basics triger . And my own wildcat 6mmX284 short . And a old cheep stock I bought at a gun show for $50. and shot this at a 600 yard match . And only had a B&L 24 power scope ( everyone else had 36 or 46 power scopes )).. You don't need a $3000 - 4000 gun , This was a few years back so I'll not say how much I had in it ( not much ). LOL "The original post was 2007! " never looked at that .But I shot this around 2007 .

The LRBR world has changed a lot since 2007. While I do like the idea of using a Savage dual port action in a true flat bottomed butt BR stock as a budget level entry into LRBR, I just don't know how well it would compete. I guess I'll have to build one and see. There would be a lot of value in furthering the sport with a budget grade LRBR setup.

The group below I shot in 2019 with a used LRBR rifle I bought a year earlier when I returned to competition. It had a BAT SV action, an ST-1000 stock that I added rails and a rudder to, and a NF BR scope. Except for the scope, none of the components I listed are optimum. Still, that rifle was I think a significant step up from a Savage setup. IIRC the whole thing cost me $3500--in 2019 dollars. That is what, 30% more than a Savage build?

Of course, I shot that group out of a Sinclair Competition front rest with a Edgewood front and rear bag. I had the rest bolted to a Field and Cave aluminum plate. I guess it was $1200-$1300 for the rest setup and bags. Oh yeah, ammo was loaded via Autotrickler V2 or V3 on a Sartorius Entris scale and seated with a 21st Century Hydro Press. I now use a V4 on an A&D FX-120i, and the cost for that is around $1200, which is less than the Sartorius setup......and excludes the hydro press.

My point is it's hard to just stick your toe in LRBR and be competitive, and the cost isn't just with the rifle. Regardless of how you get there, you need to be able to shoot screamer groups when the conditions are good to be competitive. The pic below is a 600 yd screamer group, which is about three times the size of @BartsBullets 600 yd record.

I think for local club matches, a re-barreled Savage will be competitive, especially for a newer shooter. At least where I shoot they are. A top tier BR rifle sure is nice, but it's like the difference between a Ferrari and a dodge. Both will get you from point A to B, but it's a lot more fun with the Ferrari. (And faster)!

And I think I'll shoot the Savage in the local club score match Saturday and hope for good weather .. If shots 6-10 were in a group I think they would be in mid .100 group . This shot on 11/14/22 around 11AM .

You think the Ferrari would beet the Dodge ? Maybe but close .

Mack Bros action $675
Revolution benchrest stock with bedding block $549
Bat trigger guard and action screw set $82
Prefit barrel $289
Nut $39
Triggertech Diamond Trigger $299

That $1933.

Assemble and shoot. I have one customer that was leading the Colorado state championships in benchrest with his 6xc with this configuration except he was using a bone stock Rem 700 action.

Do you need to modify the stock to fit the barrel nut in this set up?

I shot this with my savage 11/19/22 in a local match and come in LAST place . I was pretty happy with the target anyway . Don't think it was the gun , just me can't shoot .

This is from a Brux 224 barrel that is really shooting good , only if I could shoot good LOL . Looks to me like a lot of carbon ring ,but I don't think it is in the Free bore or under the case mouth .
