Which Savage Action?

I am looking at alternatives with respect to getting into 6BR. My use will be principally paper punching and some varminting. I was initially going to buy a Cooper but I may be more satisfied by building a rifle. I am thinking about getting a Savage action and building the rifle. Which Savage action is the correct one for a 6BR single shot project. I prefer right hand bolt and left port. The Savage web-site lists a number of them but with only a 223 bolt head. Would either of the following be suitable and how does one handle the bolt head. I have been able to reduce the selection to the following:

Target Actions Right Bolt, Left Port, stainless, 223 bolt head

SVarmint Actions Stainless, 223 and standard bolt head

Also what is the difference between a Target Action and a SVarmint Action?

Alternatively I could buy a model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter and then change out the barrel. Would it be as cost effective / optimal to purchase the complete gun and then just swap out the barrel for a Pac-nor with the same barrel contour?
Also how is the HS Precision stock which comes with the model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter?

Thanks for the advice. All of this is rather new.

William,if this is the route you want to go contact Jim Briggs of Northland Shooters Supply. He currently has the action you need for the 6mmBR as well as Shilen and Mcgowen prechambered barrels for this caliber.I believe they are 1-8" twists. The only other things you would need is a stock and scope.
I bought one of the 1-8 twist 22-250 Shilen barrels from him and love it.It stacks the 80gr Bergers at 100 yds and Ive gotten sub 3" groups at 600 on calm days with it.

Or better yet, Fred "the savage master" Moreo at Sharp Shooter's Supply has brand new timed and trued Savage Target Actions for just a few more dollars than Northland Jimmy charges for stock target actions. Sharp Shooter's advertisement for these Actions can be seen on the Savage Shooters Forum, listed under the Sharp Shooter's Supply thread.

Fred can also set you up with a match quality, prethreaded & chambered, Douglas barrel, for around the same price as Northland Jimmy charges for his barrels.

Thanks guys for all the good advice. From what I have read it seems that the target actions are all large shank. With respect to barrel contours seems like there are 2 popular choices. Heavy varmint or bull barrel cylindrical/non-tapered which I am assuming is 1". Seems like the LRPV from Savage comes with the 1" bull barrel.

Both Jim Briggs and Fred are offering both. I am inclined to go with the bull barrel since this is not a walking around rifle.

I am somewhat confused as to which rifling twist might be optimal. I am inclined to get an 8tw so I can use bullets over 100 grains; however, I would like the ability to use weights in the 75 gr V-Max's also for varminting. What would you do? Do I need to pick a slower twist like a 1:10 so I can use the 75's or will the 1:8 also handle the 75s. I have read were the 1:10 will handle the 87 gr V-max and this might be the compromise twist to get.

What weights/twist have you had good luck with and what range of bullet weights can a 1:8 handle?

By the way, what is the Evolution Trigger being offered by Fred? Is it a significant improvement over the standard target AccuTrigger?

Thanks

I have a 14 twist PacNor that I am shooting 70 gr BalTips. Very, very accurate rig at 200 yards. I have two friends that have 8 twist barrels that are both shooting the 105 gr A-Max's. I can tell you that the 105 gr A-Max is a very sweet bullet in the prairie dog fields at 500 yards. I am thinking about the faster twist for my next 6BR barrel as we seem to be able to hit dogs much more consistently at long distances with the 105's when the wind is blowing.
