Anyone played much with current production M700's?

I had read that Rem Arms had upgraded with a lot of new tooling to replace the old clapped-out stuff up at Ilion before reopening, and I haven't yet handled one of current production.

With ADL's just over five bills it's tempting to grab one just to strip down for the action; wondering if anyone can compare to the RR's (concentricity, primary extraction timing, the usual stuff)?

havent seen one- do they have a new bolt stop and trigger hanger set up?.:)

Have handled several new 700s. None had any primary mechanical caming for extraction.
The new '700 Alpha 1' actions are significantly different than the standard new 700s.

The Alpha 1 looks like Rem copied what a lot of the 700 clones have. Does that make it an imitation of an imitation?

Regardless, the Alpha 1 does look like a good call. Hope they have a long enough magazine box to go with that faster twist. I suppose it's too much to hope that they got rid of that ridiculous protruding bolt nose.

If they are serious, they do need to offer the cartridges that are popular today. Like: 22 Creed, 6.5 PRC, 7 SAUM, 300 PRC, 338 Lapua. If they don't, they won't be putting a dent in our custom rifle builds anytime soon.

All that said, for me, I'll keep using my CRF M-70 actions for my hunting rifles and BAT actions for my LRBR rifles.

I have worked on 30 of the new RAR prefix actions. No noticable difference to the RR actions. The front is square, headspace is held to +/-.001. Extraction has not changed.
Walt,
Any ideas about correcting the extraction issue? I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet. I was in ME last week and stopped by LL Bean which has a sizeable gun department. They laughed when I asked if they had one.

I think it is a tolerance stacking issue. There are a bunch of dimensions on the bolt, receiver, and bolt handle that effect extraction. From a manufacturing stand point you have to pick what is important. To fix the extraction and hold those dimensions tighter, what do you let get bigger? I have not seen one which would not extract factory ammo at SAAMI pressure. Note, the RAR actions are the same as the RR actions, not the new design.

I think we're talking about old style/new production VS the new 700 a1. I'm curious about the a1 action.

Me too. It might be a good option as a donor action for a rebarrel. AG Composites makes good stocks, and if the action is fairly true it looks good. Better trigger, better bolt release, longer mag box. It will all depend on the price.

Then again, it's hard to compete with the $1000ish custom actions from BAT, Definace, and others. It will certainly compete with a Christensen or a Fierce, given all their issues.

Im sure they are using the same jig they have always used to install the bolt handle. No need to change it if it works and youre not even aware theres an issue. How many hunters have had an issue with an extraction cam? None.

I have heard of a few guys having primary extraction issues. I have experienced myself where the bolt is slightly out of spec and the extractor leaves cases in the chamber. Had a guy come into the shop with that very issue last week too.

If they are made to spec they are fine. But I still much prefer CRF M-70s for big game hunting. They can have their issues too, but feeding and extraction usually aren't a problem.
