Anyone played much with current production M700's?

I like the features on Alpha 700, like faster twists, longer mag boxes for long bullets, bolt release 5 R rifling ...just screw on another Remington factory barrel when yours wear out head space will be good to go...might have to confirm that but its possible with CNC machining... sounds good to me ...wounder if they just sell the new Alpha action. Be fun to check one out.
A few posts above, Walt says he's worked with a bunch of the new actions.
I'm assuming the 'Alpha' is just the name of the rifle with their latest action. I.e., Rem Arms is making just one Rem 700 action. Is that correct?

I believe they are making the old style actions with the “RAR” serial prefix and the higher end Alpha. The Alpha is a completely different action.

I had read that Rem Arms had upgraded with a lot of new tooling to replace the old clapped-out stuff up at Ilion before reopening, and I haven't yet handled one of current production.

With ADL's just over five bills it's tempting to grab one just to strip down for the action; wondering if anyone can compare to the RR's (concentricity, primary extraction timing, the usual stuff)?
Why even bother with factory action? $500 minimum to buy it then $300 to get it blueprinted then $200 more for a trigger. You’re up to $1000 right there. I just bought a MPA/Curtis Axiom $1100 action with a $600 barrel spun up to my specs for $1350.
Masterpiece Arms website under barreled actions. Just got it with the Switch Lug so you can simply unscrew one barrel, screw on another hand tight, 30 inch pounds torque on the lug and resume shooting. Then later you can call them up and have them make extra barrels and send them to you. No gunsmith, no action wrenches nothing.
Simplest system ever invented. Oh yeah. They will change you an extra $125 for the lug.

Because people end up with "basic" actions and over time slowly want to correct/add things.

They way the advertising states it's not the regular 700 action ...but the 700 Alpha 1 is a new 700 line all to itself ...I've never seen one.

That’s a good point I hadn’t thought of- even though that’s EXACTLY what I did. By the time I bought the gun, a stock, trigger, and researched squaring the action and a barrel I realized the economics.
I always do my learning curve with the bank account.

So I guess my post was a cautionary tale. There’s a better less expensive way.

First of all, because I'm a riflesmith and it's my own time if I decide to true it.
Second, because the post was/is intended to get information on CURRENT production M700's- including the Alpha.
The bullshit that circulates around the M700- on this forum and others- astounds me. As though, it's some second-rate pot metal POS that'll blow up in your face- or isn't capable of hitting the broad side of a barn from in a rifle from the factory.

Not everyone (including much of my clientele) demands benchrest accuracy from a hunting rifle- and are quite satisfied with the results obtained with a factory M700 action and custom barrel without the additional $500 expense for a clone.

Flame suit on, I don't GAF.

+1.

I ran Rem 700s for years in hunting rifles--factory and custom--and had just about every type of issue you can read about: Failure to feed, failure to extract, broken extractor, AD, heavy galling. I have had none of those issues with CRF M-70s, and the M-70s allow at least the same level accuracy and strength.

All that said, if someone already has a 700 and wants to build a custom, it is less expensive to use their existing action. We charge $200 to true a 700, though I am still not sure that is completely necessary. The factory trigger and bottom metal can be reused.

To Compare:

We can buy an entry level BAT Machine action for $1050. It needs a trigger which adds $200 and bottom metal and mag adds another $275. So that puts the complete action at $1525. It is very strong, well machined, true, and reliable. The trigger and bottom metal we pick will be excellent.

An American Rifle Company Nucleus Gen2 CRF action is $1000. It needs a trigger which adds $200 and bottom metal/mag adds another $275. So that puts the complete action at $1475. It too is very strong, well machined, true, and reliable. The trigger and bottom metal we pick will be excellent.

A Rem 700 SPS can be had for $600-$700. Add $200 for truing. The trigger and bottom metal are serviceable. That puts us at $800-900.

A CRF M-70 can be had for $1000-$1200. Add $200 for truing. The trigger and bottom metal are good. That puts us at $1200-$1400.

There are factors other than cost and accuracy. If you are going all out on a build, with a $750 - $1000+ stock, a full $500 cerakote "pattern" job, a $2000+ scope, A $200 titanium brake, $825 for fitting barrel, brake, and bedding; $600 fluted barrel, $350 bottom metal, $200 trigger; then maybe spending another $500-$1000 for a custom action is the better call.

So there really isn't a wrong answer.........

The only thing I would add to the above comments is that most shooters/hunters are not capable of taking advantage of the difference between a factory rifle that shoots MOA or a custom rifle that shoots one-half MOA.
So what is the point in spending the extra money for a custom unless you plan to use it for competition.

I just finished a build on a RAR - 700. The bolt face was so rough that the first extraction, extracting the Go gauge from the barrel, set the extractor under the rim and it stayed there. Had to remove the extractor, smooth out the undercut and install a new extractor. Kind of regretting not putting a Sako in while I had it apart.

Next build is going to be on a Mack Bros.

I finally figured out what “GAF” means. Only took a day.
