Need help with 6mm Remington loads

I’ve seen this done too. I Shoot with the bag pretty close to the receiver. Didn’t think about the buttstock bolts, And I totally forgot about my dad doing something to his fore end when I was several years ago. he has the same rifle I have in a 30-06. I need to follow up on that and see what he did
The forearm is mounted to a hanger. Some smiths will put a set screw through the hanger near the receiver to prevent the forearm from contact the barrel.

Just got in from the range today checking some load in different brass. I was loading 6mm rem in Norma brass and had SD's and ES all over the place. Today using Browning brass and the same load (Berger 105 VLD Hunting and 42 gns of H4831SC) I got the sd down to 2.0 and ES of 4 all with good 1/2" grouping at 100 yds. I'm running a 8 twist lilja barrel in a 700 LA.

If the gun isn't new in the box have the barrel bore scoped to see what is going on inside the tube. 6mm Remington is a overbore cartridge and is known to be hard on barrels.

It's probably a long shot but it's worth looking into. Don't over look the basic stuff either [screws are tight etc].

I had a 6mm Remington that exhibited many of the traits you described and in my case the barrel looked great when looking though it from the breech or muzzle but inside, it looked like a cobblestone street and quite frankly, I'm surprised it shot as good as it did. Mine was a Remington 700 made in 1970. It had 6mm Remington stamped on the barrel and IIR it was a 1-9 twist.

Hope this helps,

4831 is my favorite powder in the 6mm Rem. I think the B78, like the Ruger No.1, works best with about 5 pounds of upward pressure at the forearm tip (actually, just behind the tip). Do check buttstock fit and tightness as well. WH

Winchester makes browning rifle brass and ammo. I've never had win brass that compared with Norma but you need to use what works in your rifle. Good shooting!
