Need help with 6mm Remington loads

Hey all,
I’m new here, and in search of some help with my 6mm Rem. I can’t seem to find a load it likes. I’m using what I have on hand because of how hard it is to find components now. So far I’ve used a 90g ELD-x, 100g Nosler partition and 75g v-max. The 75g gave the best groups at 1.25” using IMR4064. The 90 and 100g no matter what powder or charge weight it grouped 2.5-3”! Real discouraging cause I was looking to use it for deer hunting this year but not happy with the accuracy. Also questioning the efficiency of the lighter bullets for deer? Was not really wanting to go under 90g and definitely not a varmint round, but all I had to test. Anybody willing to share any secrets for a deer worthy round?

Also…forgot to mention I’m shooting a Browning
B-78. Thanks for any help!

I have a couple B 78’s one is factory 6mm the other 6mm AI.

I have been using RL 19 in the 6mm with 87 grain Berger VLD Hunting at 3200fps. Consistently sub 1” at 100 yards.

The other B78 is one that Lee Shaver did an excellent job re-barreling in 6mm AI with a Brux barrel at 28” and tapered octagon considerably heavier than factory.
I use the same load for fire forming the brass and get excellent accuracy while forming the brass.

The B 78 triggers leave a lot to be desired. Lee also did a trigger job on the 6mm AI. Well worth the price.

Is that the only powder that you have? A slower powder would probably be better for the heavier bullets. 4350, H4831, N160
What scope is on the rifle?
Can you get your hands on some 100 grain Sierras or 95 grain Nosler ballistic tips?

C_SIG, if you can, use your cleaning rod and try to check your twist. I googled your rifle in 6mm Rem, and could not find anything definitive on the twist. Some speculate 1:9 or 1:10, but no certainty. For the Rem rifles in 244 (1:12), the deer bullet commonly recommended is Nosler 85gr Partition. It seems that so far your results are leaning towards shorter bullets. The first logical thing is to check your twist. That is a really neat rifle BTW.

Best of luck, Peter.

According to my list of factory twist rates, the Browning B-78 is 1:9".

243 Winchester - 1 in 9"....Rem 660, 700, 788 (1969), Ruger 77
243 Winchester - 1 in 9-1/8"....Rem 700, 7400, 7600, 7;

244 Remington - 1 in 10"....Rem 700
244 Remington - 1 in 12"....Rem 722, 760, 740, 725, 40-XB; Sako

6mm Remington - 1 in 10"....Rem 40-XB; Schultz and Larsen; Ruger #1, 77; Browning

With a 1:9" twist rate, I doubt this is a twist rate problem.

Is this rifle new to you, where you have no experience with accuracy loads at all? New rifle?

Is this rifle used and potentially having problems which are not twist related?

For 90g ELD-x I’ve used IMR4831 and Varget for the 100g Nosler I’ve used IMR3031and IMR4350.
I have a about 5 of the 100g Sierras. Only luck I’ve had finding anything in stock is hornady cx and Barnes tsx. Both 80g
Scope is a leupold VX-2 3-9x40

Sounds like some cool rifles you have! I love the look of the b-78 but calling the factory trigger creepy would be an understatement! lol

I see shooters rest the barrel on bags with these type rifles, and then wonder why group's are not great. For end may need to be floated(buttstock bolt needs to be snug).

The rifle is new to me. I bought it about 2 years ago at a gun show. I used factory loaded 95g sst to sight it in with and was unhappy with the groups, that’s when I bought the reloading supplies for it but haven’t touched it again until last week. The gun has hardly any wear marks on it. looking thru the barrel from the breach and muzzle end with a bore light, I don’t see any pitting or excessive wear but I am by far no expert at diagnosing any wearing issues unless it’s real bad

I’ve seen this done too. I Shoot with the bag pretty close to the receiver. Didn’t think about the buttstock bolts, And I totally forgot about my dad doing something to his fore end when I was several years ago. he has the same rifle I have in a 30-06. I need to follow up on that and see what he did

There is potentially a correction which gets used in the forearm. Ask your Dad then get in touch with a gunsmith.

If this was a used rifle when you bought it, I'd look at the crown which may have tiny bits of damage.

This not about loads.

Enjoy the process!

We shot many thousands of the 85g Sierra bthp with 38.5g of H4895 with a fed 210 in Win brass, got 5/8" at 200.

Deer, we used the 95g Nosler partition with IMR 4831 with 9 1/2 at 3150, and this load pole Ax's deer, near and far.

With my 6MM Remington with 75 grain VMAX I use R19 powder. Even slower for heavier projectiles. Many factory 6MM Remington rifles have lots of freebore.

You haven't said but what condition is the rifle in? I'd clean it with focus on copper defouling. Check the bore and throat, if it's all good then check the cartridge overall length. A safe pressures load should allow you to move to find the lands with your projectile choice. That will most likely change group, not necessarily for the best some times. Once you can be sure your jump to the lands is minimum, adjust the load for the desired velocity range and see if the group is nice. You may need to adjust the seating depth and charge a bit, or even different burn rates.

You may want some trigger work.
