New Long Range Shot

Pretty cool.......BTW those 69 shots are most likely HALF what it took for most people to get into the 1000 yd club for the VHA.
Only one shot required for me, 22 yrs ago with a 308. first shot kill ...but it's still a matter of some luck on a tiny target, at a mere 1000 yds. 69 shots is not impressive, at any range. Should be a 10 shot minimum with 2 hits, on target. Anyone can get lucky, but repeating the feat several times in a few shots shows precision equipment and skill....with a 2 man team max, and a limit on scientific equipment, just a spotter and a range finder, a even better, to accompany your favorite rifle. It's already satellites and electronic gadgets but soon artificial intelligence, and a robot to hold your gun...that doesn't use the inferior outdated bullet as aprojectiles.

I don't agree or disagree with what they did. I do believe they should have put two more shots on target after they made the first one. I believe that was a big mistake and would have stopped most of these posts. But having shot extreme long range before extreme long range was cool, what they did is no less impressive. My question to you guys is how many of you have ever shot past 2000 yards? How many of you have 50 to 100 grand tied up in your pickup truck. How many of you have 50 to however many thousands of dollars tied up in your drag car, race boat, or even your fishing boat. I guess all I'm saying is to each his own and who are we to bash their accomplishments with absolutely no idea what it took to do it. I have a pretty good idea what it took to do it and it is an accomplishment in it's own right, even though I believe they should have put two more on target.
Agreed. If I was a betting man I would wager a heavy bet 100% of the above nay sayers that claim to be accomplished marksmen would be pea cocking if they had accomplished the same shot.

Why so much animosity and negativity towards another fellow shooter that has a big accomplishment is beyond me! What happened to the good ole days when a pat on the back and an at a boy was the common response from like minded folks. I guess I’m a dinosaur for expecting people to find joy in others success. Regardless I digress. Great shooting and great accomplishment, I think it’s awesome and a heck of a shot with a lot of time and effort. Keep enjoying what you do!

I do agree with you in as, it was a hell of a shot. 4+ freaking miles. That's a long way.
The issue is, how many shots, and the practicality of it.
It's a great accomplishment in the ELR field.
This forum deals with more of a precision based ideology, not lets shoot
as many times until we hit the target once.

How many shots did it take to kill the second one at 1000+ yards with the 308? I had kills with a factory heavy varmint in 308 out to 1300 yards but it wasn't very consistent at those ranges. We had a 10 year old and 35 year old both girls set up at 1003 and 1008, both were over 1000 but under 1010 kill 9 dogs in less than 30 seconds with one miss. Very fun to watch.

I not one to judge, but anyone can post rules that say “they shoulda done it this way”. But to put a limit on whatever methods anyone used to accomplish a goal is just sayin you don’t agree with there accomplishments. So what. Move on. No military sniper that took 1.5+ mile shots hit on cold bore first shot. They walked the bullet in. (Read those articles) From experience, this is my purpose build 2 mile+ setup from 2009-2010 for PRAIRIE DOGS…. Yep it’s 71lbs. Yep it’s a converted bench gun. Yep I built the custom adjustable scope mounts. I made the 500,1000,1500 and 2k club in varmit hunter downrange club. NOPE, I ain’t carrying it very far. We didn’t kill a prairie dog over 2 miles, but it’d hold a 5’-6’ group at 3,640 yards. So yea, there is some luck with hit any target at EXTREME distances. But don’t bash on someone’s accomplishments if you don’t agree. Oh, and jghoghunter that posted earlier in the thread, that’s his purpose built 2 mile gun in the background. The green gun. Wonder if he weighed his primers and down to one kernel of powder? Heck of a shot to me no matter how many shots it took. 4 1/2 miles is a loonng way. Does anyone know what power of scope was used? Thanks

EDIT: Found the scope and power according to link they posted. Would have thought it would have been more power.

It ain't about me or how pathetic my marksmanship is...but 1 hit in 69 shots is not impressive, but ya finally got lucky, and the wind probably helped ya out, situation....no matter the range, ...How many shots are acceptable to connect one time with one target 500rds, or a thousand? ...Every day for 20 years, hoping, some day you will get lucky and be successful?
Unimpressive to me without followup hits and a much lesser round count down range. They should keep practicing...and I encourage that. Your opinion may differ....but for now, the money spent helps the economy and keeps some folks entertained...so there's that... and that's a good thing.

Well, at the very least you can say they did manage to finally hit the target.

I have always said that every shooting Discipline has a factor that makes top level accomplishment difficult. This one’s difficulty lies in the distance.

Two more shots on target? They would have only needed 138 more rounds.

Well I'm glad I'm able to have my own opinion even though it's wrong. I'm still waiting for the number of shots to kill the second dog past 1000.

This goes back 15 years when we were doing the same thing at 3000+ yards. Others could not do it or would not try it so there for no one could do it. Anything we did was wrong and all the keyboard shooters were right for whatever reason. I got tired of defending our actions then and I'm done defending these guys actions now from some people that just don't have a clue.

Thanks, for allowing me to "have" an opinion...You're claiming greatness of accomplishment with 68 misses and 1 final lucky hit ....firing for effect artillery style, until some day ya make a hit.. I'm not impressed... I don't have to be, as my opinions about it, are...mine.
But you can be totally ecstatic and overwhelmed by the accomplishment of the whole event, as by opinion of it,...good for you.

Like I said I'm done. You obviously have a hard time reading the first two lines of my first post. Good luck and have a good day!
