CMP eMail Verification RE CA Law

Today I received an email allegedly from the CMP which reads in part:
"Due to a new Bill in California, CMP cannot send out email communications to our subscribers without having your full address and birthday in our email database. Please click on the “Update Profile” link in the footer of this email to update your contact details. . . ."

(1) Is this legit?
(2) What is this "new Bill in California" all about?

Forum Boss: We have posted multiple threads about California AB 2571. This provides a penalty of $25000 for ANY communication related to firearms or shooting sports activity, which communication MIGHT be "attractive to minors". There are also penalties for promoting marksmanship training programs. Under the insanely overbroad terms of the unconstitutional statute, each communication could be the source of a separate $25K fine.

And they say California is always ten years ahead of the rest of the country. In ten years, I might be a hunted felon because I teach kids to survive in the outdoors. How evil of me!
You might be a bad boy in California but what better way for kids to spend time? When I was young some of my best memories are from time being spent doing anything outdoors. I never wanted to come back in the house!

Just arrived:
Attention Email Subscribers:

CMP made a mistake. We do not need our customer phone numbers, addresses or dates of birth. My sincere apologies, Mark Johnson, DCM

Yep, here is the latest. I assume the CMP realized they only had to block emails to CA people under 18, which could be done by less invasive means (not by putting actual birthdates in a CMP database):

There is something else I was wondering about with the Calif. law. Will a young person that enlists in the service before they are 18 not be able to do all of the training in basic if they are stationed anywhere in California ? I only thought of this because my niece is leaving for Lackland in 2 weeks. It was possible that she could have been called in before she turned 18. Is it going to get that crazy ?

A standing military is at the bottom of most politicians lists. Only break glass if needed.

Just my .02

I suppose things have changed in the 46yrs since I went through basic at Lackland. WAFs, as they were still called then, had a separate confidence course and received no weapons training.

Honestly, we didn't either. Our so called "weapons training" consisted of 1 day of "dry fire" classroom to learn the M16 and 1 day of live fire at the range.

Didn't touch an M16 again until 16yrs later when I had to re-qualify for my 1yr remote tour in central AK. Didn't have to qualify for my 3 1/2yr tour in Japan but did for a CONUS isolated tour. Hmm.

Always wondered about the logic, or lack thereof, behind that, maybe HQ USAF thought the Russians might invade Galena. :)
