Do it yourself Stock making thread

My Howa bottom metal finally came in, so I got it fitted, final shaped the stock and gave it the first dye coat. I hope this works! Pretty scary going for root beer and starting with a black stock! Maybe I should just go for black?A3090824-7B20-4B86-BD69-9B6CA358476D.jpegEFAC1D30-FCF5-4356-A5FC-1A60F842BF2D.jpeg

How many coats of black do you have on it now?
I've had a strong hankering to do a tacticool dye job.
If you sand it then apply more black that s been diluted 20% apply another coat and repeat 3-4 more times diluting 20% each coat until your last coat is basically a very diluted wash coat, you will have accomplished what I've been wanting to do for a while.

Hey! One heavy mopped on coat. I’m just tired. I’ll go for root beer, but the black is kinda cool.

Finally stopped in to check out your stock work. You got me ready to make one and I haven’t even gotten through the first 10 pages. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. You are a craftsman for sure

I like the wider forend...always. You can always rest a wider (beavertail style?) forend on a pack, and almost get as stable a platform as dragging around a bipod...almost.

I'll take a wider forend for a hunting rifle...always. It looks good!

Multiple coats sanding and diluting as you go with blak is a mind blowing effect. T-rust me!!!
If you really want rootbeer sand that shit down, do a 70-30 mix of black and medium brown 70 being black.
Follow with medium brown strong and straight. Sand that shit down and Follow with copper " medium brown and red 50/50, sand that shit down and go to vintage amber, now sand that shit down.
Follow with diluted coats of copper and vintage amber sanding between colors until you do a final wash coat in vintage amber.
When its all said and done you will have rubbed and sanded the stock 10 times.
I use 320 for the 1st 5 coats then switch to 400 grit for the remaining coats.
Take what you will from this and post pictures of the outcome.
I can't wait to see the finished product.!!!!

Jaysus, man! Now I AM liking the black more!

Don’t sand THAT shit down!
Exactly!!!

I’ll explain what I did. I sanded down the black with 400 and applied black/brown mix. Let it dry and sanded that down. Did the Amber and sanded that down. I then did a diluted mix of brown/red and liked it. So now I have the color I want! Yay, but...I’ve been sanding at 400, then 600 before the last stain coat. I’m not spraying multiple coats of clear on this stock like Bc’z does. I’m using oil and I have to get to 1000 with my stain intact. I’m using a stain diluted with water. Every time I put a coat of stain on, it raises the grain and I have to sand again. That screws up the stain. I sat and thought, then remembered the stain instructions. It said I could use water or alcohol to dilute the stain. Bingo! Alcohol won’t raise the grain! I sanded the whole stock thru 600, 800 and 1000. I filled a small tray with denatured alcohol. I added a little brown and mopped it on the stock. Not right, so I added a little red to the tray and mopped that on. Nope. I added a little amber. Nope more red. I kept adding a little of each color to the mix and mopping it on the stock, not even letting the previous coat dry. After 8-10 tries, I got what I wanted in color and the alcohol didn’t raise the grain. I let it dry for a few hours and gave it a coat of oil. While putting the oil on, I could feel minor rough spots under my finger, so I wet sanded the stock with 1200. DONE!

Ya know.....the more I look at that pic, the more I like it. You may be on to something. I have some more Tiger Maple around here somewhere.
