CZ 457 Varmint

The top Five in National A-Line points shoot with a firm hold, shoulder and all. I use a firm hold with one rifle and free recoil with another. I’m number 5. With Factory guns you don’t have a heavy stock with a wide, flat forend, or a super light trigger in most cases.
What rifle do you use a firm hold and which one free recoil.

I picked up a 457 Varmint 22lr about 2 weeks ago. First trip out, I tested several loads at 50 yards. Guess which one did the best. Yep the cheap Federal Champion 40gr Solid. Eley match was not very good. Have my trigger spring coming and will repeat the test after a good cleaning and trigger job. My point is do not assume match ammo will outshoot others. After some more break-in, it will be interesting to see how these shoot. BTW, love this 457 varmint, it is by far the best 22lr shooter I have owned.

try some tac 22 and lapua center x both my varmint pro and my vpt-mtr like those at 50 and 100 yards after 100 the tac opens up i shoot the center x out to 250 yards with good results (1" at 175 , 1 3/4" @ 200 and 3" at 250

My 457 Varmint is strictly a bench gun, 50 & 100 yards and Benchrest sillouette. A Yo-Dave trigger spring at about 14 ounces, a 15 MOA Area 419 rail, a 40X Muller Scope and a 3" bag rider. It can't beat the best Match Rifles like my Walther in BR but more than holds it's own against any factory rifle. My best 100 yard bench rest is below. I wish they all looked that good but it is a factory rifle. RWS R-50 and Lapua Midas+ are it's favorites but SK Rifle match does fairly well also.

I often find cheap promo ammo that will shoot pretty darn close to the good match stuff in some of my rifles. It's not as consistant of course and you'll get a flyer every once in a while, but for casual paper punching it's a lot more cost efficient.

Just ordered a lefty 457 varmint. Sold off my lefty 452 after I did a rimx, regretted selling it ever since, really do. Looking forward to the 457.

I got the oldest boy shooting yesterday! We talked about gun safety and squeezing the trigger vs. pulling it, seeing the impact through the scope instead of pulling your head up to look, things like that. He's having a tough time figuring out how to "get rid of the black stuff" in the scope...I tried explaining to him how having your eye closer and farther away from the scope effects how you see the target in the scope, and how you should be able to see a big, clear picture through the scope when you've got it right. I guess we'll have to keep working on it. He seemed to have a good time, and really liked ejecting spent cases, watching them go flying. Any tips on how to explain eye relief to a kid? I'm doing the best that I can, but find myself scrambling for the right words.

Getting the proper eye relief and cheek weld on a rifle can be very difficult for children. A aftermarket stock cut down and then built up as he gets bigger might help if you want to go there. The Ruger American Rim Fire has smaller shorter butstock attachments you can retro fit from Ruger as well. Good luck, and encourage him all you can.

I just picked up a CZ 457 Varmint in .22LR. It's doesn't have a match chamber. Does this mean I can't shoot "Match" labelled ammo through it? I'm not familiar at all with anything other than bulk plinking/hunting ammo for the .22LR, but want to learn.
The Varmint does have a match chamber

It is all about the ammo--Mine will shoot one hole at 50 with Center X
Almost as good with Target, Club and a surprise is the SK Semi Auto in the black box is amazing--
Trigger spring is a must go to Rimfire central see the post under CZ on how to adjust the triggers more to it than the spring for Sure
Match chamber is tighter--no big deal I have a 457 At One with the 24 barrel no match chamber and it will go toe to toe with match chamber units easy
Fix trigger and figure out what it likes on stock screw torque--then wear folks out with it
When you find that magic lot number of ammo BUY ALL YOU CAN
Cathy at Goodshooting I think in MO is the BEST source for ammo--call--the wbsite always shows out of stock but just call be nice and get great service with Excellent prices

The match chamber is not that big of a deal from an accuracy standpoint. I replaced my standard varmint barrel with an factory match barrel and noticed barely any difference at all. I was hoping that it wouldn't be as finicky with the ammo but that is not the case.

Some CZ's at least the ones I have are very picky with ammo. CCI std velocity, eley club and pretty much all inexpensive ammo shoots very inconsistent in my rifles. Center X and high end Eley works well. The next best to date is the RWS 50 that was being sold a few years back. I bought a ton of it.

Thats because inexpensive ammo is inconsistent.
If you want consistency you have to pay for it most of the time.
