Anyone buy from Precision Mathews lately

I ordered some machines in early 2021 when transport logistics were the worst. If you contact them they'll happily tell you exactly where your gear is. They gave me the ship name it was on and I could watch it float around the ocean on the internet. What a time to be alive.

I ordered the gunsmith lathe that was being updated. I placed my order with down payment in January of 2021. I( guess it will be a b it longer.

Well I ordered a 1440gt May 3rd 2022. Hopefully it shows up around October-November, at least that is the ballpark they told me. I will let you know.

I ordered mine in August of 21 and they said I’d have it in November. It’s been delayed several times. The last prediction was 4/29/22. Called a few days before that and was told maybe sometime in July. I’ll probably wait at least a year for mine. I ordered an end mill from them and it was only a couple months late. Not eight months late.

A friend of mine was looking for hos forst lathe. Almost everything he was looking for was way backorders

I would rather not wait a year , but that is what I am hearing around.

Has anyone here tried to purchase a lathe from Precision Mathews? I ordered one over a year ago. Still no lathe.
Wow mabie I should sell mine. Dont believe I could quite get myself to do that but i feel fortunate i got one. I have a grizzly to- i wonder if they are that backed up also. Probably

Contacted PM today. The lathes are built and ready to ship. Now that's the real problem to date. The supply chain from China is so dismal that the lathes have no shippers to transport them. With the current COVID outbreak in that province nothing is happening. So all of us are in the same boat so to speak. My order will be on the first shipping list once on con-us. PM fingers crossed within the next 4 months or sooner.

I purchased a Hardinge tool room Super Precision lathe, and a American made Bridgeport milling machine, years ago....and had them delivered the same day... also have a Taiwan lathe I hardly use and have never chambered a rifle in it... because the Hardinge lathe is sooo much better in every way...retired machinist. American made precision tools last a lifetime, but new American made is impossible to find...as we once produced the most precision tools in the world.Today when imported goods fail...fail to arrive, fail to perform, fail to repair, ... we fail,... we don't manufacture today, and that is a major problem for this country.

Stick with the PM order. Their machines are very nice quality for the price. Although similarly priced to the Chinese made Grizzly machines (PM is made in Taiwan), dollar for dollar you get a lot better and stronger machine from Precision Matthews. If you compare structural build quality on similar PM and Grizzly machines the difference in strength and build quality is easy to see.

Would love to find someone locally to watch in lathe in action. Not sure why but it’s really intriguing what they can create

My PM-25MV bench top mill is made in Taiwan but I just went to the PM web page and see they have changed the design and now it’s made in China :(
And the cost is also $1000 more than what I paid 6 years ago! Just another company selling out to China to increase profit margins I guess. So I stand corrected...

I also noticed the new design is about 60 lbs lighter than my original version so I don’t see how that’s any good. Expect they had the new Chinese factory make it cheaper. Cut corners and charge you more, that’s the new American way!

When it comes to a lathe for chambering barrels it all comes down to the bearings. You cant dial in a part better than the tir of the bearings. Good bearings are not cheap. Its amazing how well built the old American iron was. Even after 50 years of service they rival a new import. If your in an area that you can find used tools you would be better off trying to find an American made tool in good shape. There was a time in this country that was really something. Unfortunately before my time and never to be seen again.

Advised a buddy to buy a new PM lathe. Poor quality control, multiple problems eventually rectified but wouldn't do it again. I'm with Alex. find an American made machine with good ways, buy the best bearings for the headstock and rebuild it. Having said that, if one is found, beware of machines with fresh paint jobs.
