50 yard groups

So I found time to try a new lot of ammo the other evening, conditions were pretty good. That’s a 100 yard Ubr size target. My “bench” was unique;).
I’m glad to see it is not plugged in! What rifle are you shooting there?

Dave.

LOL yea I already had a go around with a table saw plugged in, didn’t turn out so good. That’s a model 64 repeater action Anschutz in a br stock(it came with a position stock from factory). Fun lil gun.

Center to center gives no advantage to caliber size is why it is used in BR group matches .
it doesn't matter c-c or o-o measurements, the precision is the same if bullet diameter the same when evaluating.
In this particular conversation we ( or at least most of us ) are specifically speaking of one caliber, .22LR, so no advantage to speak of. The groups we speak of, are used to select ammo or for tuning, not score. Usually they are one hole, so it needs to measure OTO, if you have a gap between shots, you need different ammo or some work done on you rifle. Again I apologize to all the group shooters, that shoot for score.

The rimfire matches I shoot for group size are all c-c measurements.
Show me a match where it's o-o for group matches??
Many informal, club level matches may indeed be shot for center-to-center group size. More serious club level matches and above will be shooting for score.

Where outside-to-outside groups sizes are used is in evaluation of ammo performance at testing facilities such as those of Lapua at Mesa and Marengo. In fact long before testing facilities were widely accessible, shooters such as position shooters evaluated ammo performance based on ten-shot groups measured oto.

More casual ammo performance evaluation is center-to-center, matching the non-RFBR matches to which you may be referring.

That's great.... I see your using a saw table but I have one of those adjustable folding benches out in my garage and I think I may have just found a new use for it.... Thanks for posting I was wondering what I was going to use it for... I originally bought it to make an outdoor reloading table but I will never use it for that but a portable shooting bench makes sense... I am fixing to move and was wondering what I could use for out in the middle of nowhere....

Here's some 5 shot groups I shot with my Vudoo followed by some I just shot with my Anschutz 1710. These aren't true unlimited benchrest guns.

Here is 5 shot group I shot at 50 yards with my factory barrel 40x using center x. The rifle is in the factory stock that has been bedded , has a 3" wide bag rider on the front where the factory hand stop rail is. It has has a jewel trigger and the barrel did have the crown redone.

For size comparison the blue 10 ring is 1/2" from outside edge to outside edge, inside to inside is 3/8". I have shot similar groups on other days but this was done in the sighter during a match.

I buy .25 black dots off Amazon. put them on a white piece of paper and shoot them at 50 yds.
Vudoo V-360 Bushnell forge 4.5x27 Lapua Center-X

Just did some measuring on official targets

ARA is scored worst edge and the
ARA factory - 100 ring is about .870, the X is about ..175 it has to be wiped out for an X. Not a lot of room for error there
ARA unlimited 100 ring is about .50. The X is about .075. Easier to X but harder to get 100

USBR 10 ring is about .1 in diameter. To get a 10 you have to nick the edge, to get a X you have to wipe the ten ring out. That would be about .5 edge to edge appx

Apologies if these measurements are off a bit. Best I can do with calipers

For practice get some 3/8, 1/2, or 3/4 inch stick on dots put 25 on a piece of paper and see how many you can put inside the dots without breaking the outer edge. That would be USBR, ARA unlimited and ARA factory
