I'm a "600" Shooting Range Member ;)

So today to my delight I successfully qualified for my club's 600yd range. It's a brand new range which has been in the works since 2001. What an awesome and gratifying experience to not only reach out to 600, but to do so with my own hand loads! I was prepared as best I could be , which in hindsight made my doping pretty straight foreward. My only mistake was a miscounting of clicks from shooting 300 yds (4.5 MOA) up to my needed 600 yd's 16.6 MOA. I somehow misinterpreted my dope notes and went and extra 8 clicks too many which still got me on paper at 600 but I was way high and just off the scoring rings. I was very puzzled at the range why this happened, but did the corrective MOA math and got well into black within 2 more shots. Only after I got home and did some reverse elevation click checks did I realize my click counting mistake. The wind was very light so it made qualifying fairly easy, and my Rem 700 Varmint .308 using my most consistent 168smk load performed flawlessly ! ;) Now i'm really looking foreward to "ladder" testing and learning wind hold overs !

And learning how to shoot 600 yds with mirage.

The day's conditions were pretty much ideal for quals, it was about 81F, low humidity, calm breeze (which as I was schooled on actually keeps mirage to a minimum).

Congratulations .... :) .... that good feeling comes flooding back when you repeat the success at 1K.

Many of us asked that specific question if our club had plans to expand to 1K. I was told "can't be done". Issue being is our 600 yd firing line is literally 10 feet in front of an abutting next town's property line.

I also learned how to work the pits and score, as there was 10 shooters qualifying and we were split up into 2 squads. 5 shooters / 5 "pullers" and that was a great learning experience as well. Our targets frames are some really old vintage high power military targets I believe originated from Europe. They worked awesome, and are very well built, but still need some tweaking and adjustments, still work in progress.

Yay! Good shooting!

It was the best time I’ve had in a long time. I took a friend to our 600 range, set up my 6.5x47 and told him to shoot the steel ram. After a few shots, he started calling his shots on which part of the ram. Horn......hit! Hoof.......hit! Nose.......hit! We had a ball! He was hooked and I built him a gun.
