Let’s talk paper targets

Here is the target I created some years ago, and many guys like it.

I aim for the center diamond and align the cross hairs with the black lines. I find this allows very precise aiming if you have thin reticles.

Set your scope‘s POI up a few clicks so the first group forms above in the gray circle. That way you can shoot a couple groups per frame.

This, and dozens of other targets, can be downloaded for FREE on the AccurateShooter.com Target Page.

There are numerous precision grid targets available on that page:

I use the top target most of the time. It's become my favorite.

It is beautiful and well worth waiting for, Gasper It said my pictures went thru so hopefully they fall out of the cloud one day.

I don't do much bench shooting but when I do for load development or initial scope sight in, I simply use a Birchwood Casey target dot pasted in the center of a sheet of white (Brightness 95) copy paper*. Simple and cheap. For me, if the target gets too complicated or messy, I will focus on the target rather than the reticle which leads to poor shooting.

For practical practice for varmint / predator hunting, I use a 3 x 5 card which simulates the vital area of a ghog / predator. I staple on a piece of brown cardboard and shoot off my shooting sticks at various distances to test my field marksmanship capability, ability to read wind, and deal with mirage. This represents the vast bulk of my shooting.

*on the 8.5 x 11 copy paper I draw a cross centered on the paper so I can center the target dot.

I use file folders, and I draw horizontal lines on them. I then draw X's a few inches apart centered on those lines. I find it to be a great way of getting an exact point to aim at even if your using a lower power scope. It's pretty easy ( to me anyway) to see where the lines of the X intersect . Sometimes i'll use a bright orange bingo dauber to "dot" the x, but it isn't necessarily needed.

For BR rifles, I use the official BR target. Why use anything else? For "F" class rifles, I shoot at a conventional bullseye, just as at a match. For silhouette, I generally shoot at silhouette printed targets or at the steel targets. In other words, with target rifles, I shoot at the appropriate target.
Back when I was shooting BR a lot, I made up a stamp which produced a circle just like the "10" ring on the BR target. By the way, I usually like to hold on the edge of the ring, at nine o'clock. No good reason.
For hunting rifles, I shoot at a conventional bull or, in some cases, a blank piece of printer paper. At 200 yards, with a 2.5X scope, the blank paper is just fine. I am not trying to produce tiny groups with these rifles. In the field, I'll be shooting at a neutral colored, oddly shaped, target so I see little point in proving the rifle on a geometrically precise target. By the way, I have fired a lot of sub-moa groups, shooting at a blank piece of paper with a 4x scope. My goal, with most of the hunting rifles, is to stay in 2 -3 inches at 100 meters from the sitting position. WH

I'm with you K22! Only I use the back of NRA 200-yard or 300-yard replacement centers, having quite a stock of them on-hand. And for 200-yard testing, place either what amounts to a 1/2 min Birchwood Casey blaze target dot at that distance, or even a 1 min, at center of target. Thereafter I click left or right and up or down to shoot my test groups without worry of shooting-up my center aiming point. By just turret manipulation, I can put up to 64 shot groups on the target back at 200 yards, but don't ever go that far.

Try nationaltarget.com

I couldn't access their website this morning may be down for maintenance. They are the official supplier of match targets for IBS and I believe NBRSA uses them also. Their 100 yard targets are reasonably priced.

I buy match targets for 3 clubs here and if you can get a bunch together to order you can save a pile of $ based on the number of targets you order.

I took the target recommended by the Boss and modified it to have six targets per sheet. I then mount two of them on a piece of cardboard. I don't like going back and forth to replace targets. I user either heavy paper or photo paper to print them on. I don't remember where the original design of the second target came from. The third target I use at 50 yards for rimfire.
