Powder Prices in Local Stores

online, there seems to be quite a bit of powder(relatively speaking) and even CCI 400 SR primers available today. I stopped at a local GS and they had loads of loaded ammo at sky high prices. They even had some Alliant powder, 16, 19, 23 and 26, for, are you sitting down?, 70$ a pound. They had two 8 lb jugs of VIT 50 BMG powder, 400$ each.

I mumbled to my self "you've got to be kidding". A store clerk overheard me and said well, if you want to shoot that's the price. I said, I do but not that bad. No thanks. Disheartening to a degree!!
Yea, prices are high, very high but that sounds over the top. I can't afford those kinds of prices.

While I have enough components for about another year, maybe a little longer if I ration my shooting, I may be in a situation where it's: " A Farewell to Arms" for me!

PS: Maybe I'll get into spear hunting.:(

Here in Nebraska I can find powder at eh-reasonable prices at local shops around $40 lb for most powders (with the exception of vihtavouri). Hopefully it’s making a comeback.

local gunshop here 1lb containers of powder range from $40 to $60 , 8lbs kegs are $400, and its still sitting there too, a mail carrier came in while i was there and said "wow you have more guns on the shelf than i ever seen at this day and time", we laughed and told him the reason is because the prices are jacked up!

One local store gets powder about once a month. Most ball stuff like 335 is about 35$ and most extruded powder is 39-45$ depending on what it is.
The other local store is about 8-10$ a pound higher.

I haven't seen elevated in-store prices on powder, if they have it. Primers yes, $95/brick.

Typically I wouldn't support people jacking prices like that, but if I saw RE23 and 26 on the shelf I'd clean them out and then not go back ;) I haven't seen those powders for sale anywhere in 2+ years.

I have come to the conclusion, for myself, that I have about enough powder, primers and bullets to burn out the barrels on my rifles. Once that happens, IF I still have to search for hours for components and pay outrageous prices, I will sell all my rifles, both Competition and Hunting except one>>>a Dasher to keep mostly for fun. I am sick to death of looking, looking and hoping only to pay crazy prices to shoot. If you know me, I have been shooting something from BB Guns to full-blown F-Open rifles since I was 8 years old. Giving up most of my shooting would be because as I age I have little patience for what we have to go thru these days to shoot. If it persists, I will turn my attention to fishing 99% of my time. If that happens, I will sell my rifles and they are excellent! Keep your eyes peeled in about 2 years for the deals of a lifetime! I hope it doesn't come to that>>>>but it very well may!

I'm of a similar mind. Trouble is that it is not just shooting that is impacted by excessive regulation and do-gooders. Dropped by a relatively remote lake today that I fished many years ago. I was checking to see if the ice was either gone or thick enough for ice fishing. It has a reputation (well deserved) for producing monster lake trout. It's a jeep road in and there were two ways to get to the far end of the lake on even more primitive roads. Both of those are now blocked and posted with no trespassing signs. So the road ends at one end of the lake that is not all that fishable. You have to hike in to get to the good parts of the lake. And hiking along the shore is not an option in places so overland is the only route. Couple that with the fact that in order to leave your car or even enter the area you are required to have what they call a Discovery pass here in the peoples republic of washington. Yes, you have to pay for that pass. Now couple that with regulations that in some areas are nearly impossible to decipher. So basically what they have done is tax access to public lands that only those who are young and fit can access these days and only lawyers can decipher the rules associated with fishing a particular area. Good deal for young fit wealthy lawyers while the bulk of the people who own the land (citizens of the state) are taking it in the keester. It's a land takeover that few people realize is happening. Same thing is happening for ORV access to public lands.

Find a good spot to fish. I'll come to Oak Ridge once this year and come visit. Stephen

Support local brick and mortar. As most seem to be experiencing, prices are better, and the good shops are empowering loyal customers and competitors. For example, my LGS sponsors a good majority of local matches and helps the competitors that help them and the local scene. Last time I was in and asking about powder, the owner asked what I needed for my new rifle. Long story short, he had a case (10lb) of H4350 for me a couple weeks later. He knows that some of us aren’t hoarding for the sake of hoarding, and will actually be using it. At $45/lb for a single lot, I feel like he did me a solid favor.

Im no great competitor, nor sponsored by said LGS. But I do show up early and sometimes the day before to help set up the range for matches, stay late to clean up and repaint/repair targets, and we typically go for a match crew dinner after a good morning of shooting. I’m thankful to have the ability to support a fantastic local club that in turn supports its members.

I saw some powder in a local store this week for $40 a pound, mostly Reliant. 9mm FMJ ammo was $19 for 50 rounds, down from $50 per 50 rounds. The gun counter was pretty well stocked up and last summer it was bare. But no primers. I snagged a 500ct box of Sierra BlitzKings for $120 + tax.

We have an annual gun show near me the last weekend in Feb. it will be interesting to see what components are there and the prices being asked.

Last time I was able to buy 8208 it was $28 lb. same store right now has 1lb. for $50 + tax.
I'll just keep checking online vendors for it and hopefully find an 8lb. jug.
