Jewell trigger dead after three shots

About a month I was careless enough to drop my R700 action on the workshop floor. A bit like toast landing butter down, but of course, it landed trigger down and broke my Timney trigger. My fault not theirs. So, I drove over to Brunos and bought a Jewell HVR. $200 later I had a working trigger -- for three shots. Then it quit.
Had an overseas trip, but downloaded the instructions from here and set at it today. I *thought* it might be overtravel, but no it isn't. Safety will work 50:50 but even when I add a good bit of sear engagement most of the time the bolt fires when I turn the safety off. 'Nuff said, I just had to cancel my range booking for tomorrow.
We'll see if Brunos is interested in replacing it, but I'm not. I may be out $200 but it's going in the trash. Don't have time for wonky triggers.
I'll buy a Geiselle or Triggertech, likely the former. From experience, at least I know they work.

PS: No, I didn't drop the Jewell :)

I've had several Jewell triggers over the years, mostly HVR like yours and the only time I had a problem with them was when I didn't follow the instructions. I'm at a loss since you said you followed the instructions. I hope you get it taken care of but if you don't and decide to throw it in the trash please send me a PM before you do.

Thanks

You sure are bad mouthing a great product that a large percentage of this forum uses! I would go back to the supplier and manufacture before declaring it a wonky trigger.

A great product ? Seriously! Borden refuses to ever sell another Jewell trigger to a customer. My friend asked Arnold Jewell why are they such a piece of crap. He said Randy I turned the business over to my kid and he is running it into the ground. Arnold told him I know the triggers are bad. Let's call a spade a spade and not candy coat things. You want to do these forum members a favor, tell them the truth so that they don't get stuck with one. Jewell's were a good trigger at one time.

Oh come on Jim, there’s been to many proven ones out there!
I’m a nobody though and will let the right ones give their thoughts.

My last Timney, wouldn't stay cocked on bolt close. Realised the factory ADL trigger guard was interfering with the trigger. After I removed some material from the guard all is good. I guess that's why it is an aftermarket part.

Ya the older ones, not the crap they are turning out today. When Borden built a new rifle he would order a Jewell and when he got it he would blueprint it like he's always done. He will not even order one now because they are so bad. My friend Russ from up here in Maine is having another rifle built from Borden. When it came time to get a trigger Borden flat out told him he's not dealing with Jewell triggers anymore and suggested buying a Flavio. Well they are out of stock so I told Russ that I would take one of the older Jewell that I had on 6 rifles that I purchased last year because I was going to replace all of them with B&A triggers so I sold him an older one and he sent it to Jim. Even Arnold Jewell told my friend that he knows the newer ones are junk. So that ought to tell u something.

Jewell has been a 'gold standard' for years and years [except for their AR triggers]. All products have problems - it's how the mfg handles the problems. Jewell has always made it right for me.

I've also had 4 TriggerTech Diamonds. All 4 went bad after a few hundred rounds. TriggerTech was great about handling each one - but they aren't for me going forward.

My 2oz Jewell I haven't shot in years. It functioned perfectly every time it's been to the range. My Trigger Tech Diamond has over 1000 rounds fired on it and its been flawless. There's plenty of good triggers out there and a few that stand above the others. I've never intended to own the best, just good. If you're dead set on throwing it in the trash PM ARW.

For those who ask about clearance: The Jewell was a snug fit in the forward pin, but it went in fine and worked on the bench before going to the range. Including checking the preset trigger weight before putting the action back into the stock. Which makes it also worth noting that since the trigger and action is out of the trigger guard assembly on my bench -- well, it isn't clearance there that's the problem either.
As to damaging the action by dropping it.... no, I don't think so. But it did do the pivot in on the actual trigger part of the Timney. Because before I discovered that I also had the bolt assy. completely apart and it was fine. BTW, the reason I didn't buy another Timney is because they don't answer their e-mails for a week.
As to "badmouthing" Jewell ... all I have done is state what has happened. Not the only one without a warm and fuzzy, it would seem.
I may follow @Dusty Stevens 's advice and take it apart in a Ziplok bag just out of curiosity, but for now, after a ~$270 donation to Mrs. Larry's shoe fund, I will have a Geiselle 700 trigger here on Friday from Midway. Never tried the 700 trigger from Geiselle but if the myriad of AR triggers of theirs I have used are any guide, it will work.

As a general rule, before I would post a product complaint on a forum, I would have contacted the manufacturer and given him a chance to make it right.
I have a different position, if I'm honest. We all have hot buttons -- each of us has different ones. I hate having my time wasted. In manufacturing, there's something called quality control, although, letting your customers do it for you is becoming a great adopted idea. I have said this before, but in the shooting sports it seems that letting the customer debug your product is an acceptable principal. I respectfully disagree. Look: mechanical things fail over time, they nearly all do. But to fail so quickly does not augur well for me. One of the reasons I just moved on to another brand.
