What do you do with used brass?

I give all my trash brass to my dad. He takes it to the recycler and gets a decent return. I sometimes even take my dad to the firing range and waits for the blasters to finish and leave. He picks up the brass and sells it.

I like your Dad!

My Dad is a retired mechanic that would rebuild Alternator, Starters and everything electric. We would collect all the Copper, Brass, Steel and Aluminum growing up as kids. And we would help him disassemble and separate it. Then sell it to the recycler. He still collects range brass that I bring or he collects. I get the brass I need, he sells the rest.

My dad drilled into me to never leave any empty case on the range... shotgun hulls, pistol and rifle cases. I have never experienced a brass shortage even through all the recent 15 years of "shortages". Once I have enough, I start giving it away to friends and family.

Also, I have a large scrap bucket of inferior/damaged brass that I culled during QC for reloading. I have been contemplating a DIY rocket furnace to melt the cases and maybe pour some paper weights (cast iron corn bread pan in shape of Great Lone Star State). Maybe 2022 Xmas gifts for my brothers and friends.

I have gotten a good chuckle out of all the YouTube videos of would-be Doomsday Preppers who are melting down cases into bronze ingots to then use as currency (?!?!) for barter/trade once the government and banking system has collapsed and the land is awash with zombies. Hmmm - what has more value .... an already formed rifle case that can be reloaded OR a 10# ingot of brass that you can then form into any cartridge after you build a machine shop along a river that will harness the power of the water current to drive the belt pulley system running the lathes in the shop. I'm all for doing things the hard way... I have some nice handplanes, but I think this one is shortsighted.

Maybe not for everyone. You could make dummy rounds of varying lengths for your primary cartridge and preferred bullet. I use them to easily and quickly check throat erosion. I’ve even traveled with them if I was trying to maintain a close tolerance throughout a long match.
