New ChargeMaster Lite, I Thought I Would Check It.

I have a Denver Instruments TP-153 that I use in my bullet making endeavors. it supposed to be accurate to .01 grn. Probably more like .05.

I decided to set my new ChargeMaster Lite up to weigh 35.0 grns of my favor 6BR powder, Accurate 2495, then lay the charge on my Denver instrumentsScale to check it. I did “tare” the pan each time.

I am using a DC battery on my ChargeMaster Lite.

Here is how it came out. Out of 48 charges, there was a .1 grn variance. But since the Denver scale has in reality a .05 tolerance, let’s call it .15 grn.

Of course, this is the controlled enviroment of my kitchen cabinet. 99.9% of my loading is at the range.

I zeroed the Denver scale, and weighed exactly .1 grn of Accurate 2495. This is what it looks like.9A467318-FA6A-42DA-B527-6D1B3534B16A.jpeg9A4F6156-7362-4B2C-A86E-607390A7DD5D.jpegimage.jpgimage.jpg

While that is very good for a CM Lite, it would still bother me a lot. I routinely test powder loads in my 6 BRA in .2 grain increments. These .2 grain increments do show up on the target. So a scale that has .1 grain error wouldn't work. The A&D FX-120i gets me to .02 grains, or one kernel. I can get to .001 grains with my Sartorius, but there is no advantage to that level of precision--though it was nice to be able to validate the A&D.

Now with a larger capacity case or with a non LR BR rifle, a .1 grain error would be fine.

I like the comments, but who is “Wagoner”?

Well now I think we need to see your reloading set up at the range.

I agree. The ChargeMaster Lite works fine for Short Range BR, certainly better than a powder thrower. but it is not adequate for the long range game.
i talked to well known short range shooter who shoots quite a bit of long range, and he is going to help me set up system for loading at the range with equipment that will hit a .01 grn tolerance.

I think I am making a pretty good 103 grn 6mm bullet, the consistency just is not there yet.

My loading setup at the range is just like any other Short Range BenchrestShooter. We will all be at Tomball tomorrow, I will take a picture.

When I first started shooting Benchrest 30 years ago, everybody loaded at matches, after each group. I have gotten so used to it that I really have no setup for loading at home.

One of the things that caught my attention at this years TackDriver was the number of people coming by and commenting on all of us Short Range Shooters loading after each Match. What I thought is common place is actually the exception.

The easy button is just to get an A&D FX-120i. CE had been selling them for under $500. An Autotrickler V4 would be icing.

I measured a bunch of 103 or 105 (don't remember) bullets at the IBS LR Nationals this past August. The bullets with the J4 jackets has some variation but not terrible. The bullets with the Sierra jackets were all the same. Think I measured 15 of each. That said, I think Jason told me the J4s actually shot better in his particular barrel.

Well I would appreciate it.

I always marveled at bench rest shooters and for me always find it intriguing the loading regiments at the range.

Just about any strain gauge scale is going to be around .10. If you want better you will need a magnetic force scale or analytical balance.

Remember changing powder and saving yourself? Imagine having to shoot a shitty load all day.

You bet. I went to the line in the first Match with what I thought was going to be a competitive tune With the 2015 BR. If I had preloaded, I would have been hobbling down the road on the rim all day.

I almost didn’t bring the 133. I tossed it in the truck as an after thought.

I wish this was not true but know that it is. Hence, got to figure out a safe way to transport and set up and use the fx120i mobile. @BartsBullets has a real fancy box that he built. What are the rest of you using?
