Best -47 lapua

Philly

What do you guys think is the best caliber for the 6.5x47 Lapua cartridge. I have a 6.5 but have been thinking of building either a 6 or .25. I like the newer bullets for the 25. Probably a deer/ antelope ish cartridge. Thanks guys.

For shooting deer and “speed goats“ they all work.

Pick a bullet, build a rifle to shoot it. You won’t be wrong.

Haha. I built two 6 br‘s to carry. Should be fine but I like building rifles. Lol. Just kinda thinking the 25 should be a nice shooter.

I had one 6x47 lapua. That was one too many for me. So finicky with loads. Was happy when it got shot out so I could move on. Take that case and put a dasher neck and shoulder on it and every one I've built hammers.

Just built a 25x47 imp for hunting. I like a little more bullet weight than the 6mm's provide. Waiting on a tool so I can build the seating die.

I’m leaning towards the 25. What reamer did you use?

Absolutely!

Any one of the three can be used to build a fine rifle for hunting, especially for those of smaller stature. The recoil is diminutive compared to our ideas of standard cartridges in lighter rifles, yet the end results can be just the same, meat on the table.

I've been shooting the 131 Black Jack for quite a while waiting for the 135 Bergers to be released. Now I have to find the time to work up loads to see what the 135's are capable of. I have initial results but I'd like more data to work with.

There is nothing wrong with either the 6mm or the 6.5mm version. Both with provide when the hunter does his/her job. If the .25 strikes your fancy, build it.

Enjoy! :)

A .25-47L build includes a free VIP membership to the “cool table” at lunch. Also blackjack has a freebore recommendation on their site, and has spec’d reamers for multiple 25cal cartridges with both JGS and Manson.

Because my ‘cat is a high horsepower 25cal, and I have the mag length to do so, I went with a .185” FB (including .015” jump). I would probably go with around a .130-.150” FB for the -47L

Awesome. Thanks! I’ll check that out

Also if you reach out to Miles at BlackJack Bullets, he will provide plenty of useful info on the 25-47L, like COAL, seating depth, freebore, testing, whatever. He was extremely helpful with my wildcat design.

Also, I have both the BJ 131 and the Berger 135s on hand. The BJ 131 is a longer bullet and from most of my testing the BC is above advertised, and my entire lot of the last 500 I bought were all within 0.1gr (130.7-130.8gr). I expect them to outperform the Bergers, but have not yet tried loading the Bergers.

I will try to get take some measurements this evening on each bullet for a comparison, but I would just have JGS make the reamer for the blackjack spec and run with it.

Measured with the Hornady bullet comparator #4 .25cal. With only about .005” difference in bearing surface and ogive location, I wouldn’t change the reamer spec for the Berger 135.

Berger BtO - 0.748”
Blackjack BtO - 0.744”

I read that he recommends the 7-7.5 twist for the 25 X 47 L and 25 Creedmoor.
7.75 or slower for the larger cartridge's and Magnums

I wish I’d have done a 1-7.7 for my rifle shooting at 3160fps. The 1-7.5 is fine and it’s a hammer for what I do with it, but a little less pressure from a slower twist wouldn’t hurt.

I completely understand the desire to try something new/different,

But I think the stock 6.5x47L is as close to perfection as a cartridge design could be.
Take 7% of the recoil impulse away while improving on the ballistics of a 140gr 6.5 bullet and you have the 25x47L.
