Alex on the 284 Winchester have you been able to spec a reamer that doesn’t have clickers after 2 to 3 firings. I have tried 3 different 284 Winchester reamer designs on the rifles I’m building for myself for F Class. I’m using Lapua or Norma brass when it’s new the base will start at around .498 or less then after a couple firings just above the rim will grow to.499 or .500 and the clickers start and it drives me nuts. I built a die that I use on my bigger arbor press to bring the brass from the.200 dat. line down to the extraction grove back to.498 it’s good again for a couple more firings then the clickers comes back. Had several custom resizing dies made too. At F Class National this year I was visiting with some of the other shooters running the 284 Winchester that weren’t having bolts lift problems so I know it’s possible but I haven’t figured it out yet. I am running the usual H4831 around 2750 to 2780 and 180 hybrids. So the last 10 years I have been running the 284 Shehane at the 284 Winchester velocity with no problems at all which doesn’t make sense to some to run the Shehane that slow but It’s very accurate at that velocity with good brass life and it doesn’t have the clicker problems. If I could figure out how to get the 284 Winchester to run for me without hard bolt lifts it would be simpler to run. Thanks Austin Warfield

You already figured it out. You made a die that brings the base to .498" use that spec for the bottom of your full length die.

I have some brass that was subjected to high pressures and started clicking and hard to extract. Is it salvageable? I've only loaded and shot it once after and it was still clicking hard and difficult to extract. This is a 260AI so I don't think a SB die is available and I don't think a 30-06 SB die will work (like a ring die) either due to the shoulder diameter of the 260AI.

Toss it and buy new?

You can probably save it if its not too bad. Id bet your die is not small enough at the base though. Unless you really hurt the brass in which case the primers would be seating really loose. You could buy a cheap 308 die and cut the top off until the ID of the die is about .005" under the base of your chamber. Buy you will need a custom shell holder or rig some other idea.

It was pretty bad, not just clicking but difficult to extract. This is SRP brass, pockets still felt tight when seating. I never had clicker issues until I changed lots of powder and (stupidly ) didn't rework my load. Was piercing primers and had difficulties extracting even after the click.

Unfortunately I don't have a lathe or many tools left (was burglarized a while back) so ill have to see if I can get someone to try making me a ring die or modify a SB die. @swd what do you think?

Only issue i really had with my type s die was it was a little long. I shortened a shell holder about 10 thou and all was well.

Its a way of trying to salvage something that never should have happened. A die get smaller the farther up you go, you just keep cutting it back until you get to the diameter you want. On a .308 based case Id go .005 under chamber. The long shell holder pushes the case through your cut down die. You just do it once. This is not a fix for the original problem though.

Oh believe me, I fully aware this is my mistake, just hoping I can savage it, but knowing full well I may have to find brass now. I have backed my load down now but it still was clicking which I fear may not be able to be fixed. No harm in trying to fix it though, if its cheaper than a new bach of brass.

I’m not Dusty but a ring die only sizes the base a sm base die still bumps shoulder and other dimensions and reduced the base more than a std die

Neither am I Dusty, just a little dusty. But doesn't a ring die resemble a fat wedding ring, with no upper story at all?

My limited experience. Once high pressure blows the case to where it is clicking, even if you size it back down, the brass goes back to that size after firing and clicks again. YMMV.

I’ll go look and see if I can find one, I haven’t used it in years there use to be a video on YouTube I believe Paul Bikes Ring Die or Paul Bikes base ring die I can’t remember I think it’s a little shorter than a standard die and it only resizes the .200 line. If they only need a little and you don’t have a small base or ring die you might get by with a 45 acp die to size the base. All that stuff seems like a life time ago. Two people that would know for sure would be Dusty or Boyd Allen

This is my experience too.
Just get new brass and start over will fix the problem provided you have dies made to your chamber size.
Its what works for me now.
