Recommendations for deer hunting handloads in a Larue AR10 w/ a 16" barrel

Hello everyone. I just acquired a Larue PredatOBR ** chambered for 7.62 ** with a 16" barrel (1/11.25 inch twist) and I'm planning to use it this deer season (I going to mount an EOTech Vudu scope on it next week). So, I'm curious to know if any of you have experience in handloading for this type setup and, if so, what has worked for you. Thanks, Robert

Just remember that most load data is mainly for bolt actions.... You need to find an updated manual , iam sure there out there.... Then you need to find the load your rifle likes... No matter what , start low and work up... Don't be surprised if it likes a 168 grain bullet , most .308s do... You definitely shouldn't use unpublished data from people off the internet....

I load for brother in laws troy ar10. I use 168rg ( different brands but they all have worked) imr 4064. Bullet seated just to clear mag. Stay away from polymer tipped bullets. They have to be seated deep to run in a mag.

165 Sierra GameKings (or 165 Game King SP or HPBT or any other 165/168 class bullet) Typically give or take a half grain of IMR3031 around 38.5 should produce very accurate results. Do your own testing though. They normally don't make it more than one or two hops with that combination.

Given the range you anticipate shooting, nearly any of the common 165/168 grain hunting style bullets will perform admirably with good weight retention and expansion. These days it's a matter of finding which bullet(s) is or are available for your project.

I pretty much stick with the Nosler Partitions for this style of hunting, guaranteed performance. But there are dozens of spitzer or soft point bullets which will be suited to your rifle. You can test some of the VLDs but at 150 yards, there is very little need to adjust loads for the depth of seating you might encounter.

If you are curtailed by the necessity of solids only, the Hammer Hunter 152 gr. will work just fine.

Enjoy!:)

Many of the Pet Loads for 308 Service Rifles were decent starting points in the AR10/SR25. There are few places on the interwebs that have papers on 308 loading for the M14 that have powders that are kind to the op rods of the M14s and 308 Garands which would be no problem for your AR10 platform. The Hornady books also had sections on 308 service rifle loading.

Glen Zediker passed away recently and it looks like the web site has been taken down, which is a real a shame. Some of his mini articles on 308 loading for the M1A/M14 are still around, on the MidSouth site.

A swap of the typical 168 SMK for the 165 SGK and a little load workup is typically easy at magazine length using CCI34 or CCI200. Mil-spec brass or commercial brass can both work fine, but sometimes there is a little difference in the charge to get to the same pressure if the commercial has a different volume. Down the page in this link you will see some rough idea of recipes for 308 in the older SR platforms. The load manuals like the Hornady that have specific sections on SR loads look very similar.

You can also read between the lines on this link to filter out the wisdom of the loads that were good in the gas platforms and use them as a guide for the basis of a hunting bullet swap.

Here is another article talking M1A loading since that is still a handy starting point for this discussion.

When friends show up with the wrong ammo for their AR10s to hunt, I load them a 165 SGK over 41.5 grains of IMR4895 and seat to 2.8". If that doesn't act well I immediately fall back to a box of FGMM and check out the rig. In that instance I found problems with the build. It may just be my emotion, but any AR or M14 platform should perform at least decently with a box of FGMM or something else is wrong. So, by that logic a close clone with a hunting bullet should be a decent starting point.

Some of the possibilities for short range shots can allow you to play with lighter bullets as has been mentioned. Some of the CMP games are limited to 200 yards, and there is lots to learn about bullets as light as 125 that have worked out well. A 308 has plenty of energy for deer at ranges where the lighter bullets can play well. These days, you have to stay flexible unless you are already sitting on your supplies.

In for the range report and after action report from the hunt.
Good Luck!

Thank you sir for your detailed response to my question!

I have always found the ar10s to be be very challenging to shoot well. They are my kryptonite. Don't get too excited if it doesn't shoot bug holes. FGMM in 168 or 175 is a nice control group if you find yourself struggling.

Unfortunately I don't have any IMR 4064 and it's hard to find around here. I do have Varget, IMR 3031, CFE223 and TAC so I'll have to work up a load with one of those.
