284 Powder?

With the current component shortage I would like to see what powder everyone is using and or trying with 180 hybrids? I’m down to 4lbs of H4350 and having a really hard time finding more.

H1000 is pretty slow for straight .284, RL23 can be used in a pinch but is slow too.

The normal accepted powders for Straight 284 are...

H or IMR 4350
H or IMR 4831
H 4831sc
RL17
RL16
RL15
VV N165
VV N555
IMR 4451
IMR 4955
H100v

I know there's some others but above are ones with the most data available out there.

Its not my go to, but I have had great success with RL23. It just seems a bit hard on throats so I stick with H4831 and H4350. John's list is pretty extensive and I haven't tried a lot of them. IMR4451 would be my next to try if I was out of the three I've used. It has been fairly available if you keep your eyes out.

Accurate 4350 is in between some on your list on the burn chart. Thoughts on using it?

My 284 Win is a hunting rifle built on a commercial Mauser action. I hit the pressure wall fairly low 56,000-58,000 psi estimate according to Quickload.
So far i've tried H414, IMR4350, IMR4831, RL17 , RL19, RL22, RL23, Norma MRP, Ramshot Hunter.

So far i've liked RL23 the least, mostly due to amount of compressed load & recoil impulse.

Lately i've been playing with Alliant PP4000MR.
Won't set any speed records against RL17, RL23, but fairly accurate when i remember to tighten the scope rings to the base.
I changed scopes for a 400 yard match for hunter class.

RL23 works good in my .284 hunting rifle with 175gr Berger Elite Hunters. I’m able to get 2840fps with no pressure issues from a 26” barrel. I have to use a drop tube because it fills the case up to the base of the neck.

Consider Viht N160, N560 or N165. N165 is widely used in the UK with 180s in F-Class. It's a moderately compressed load in necked-up Lapua 6.5-284 brass with the usual long-throat COALs and usually won't give as high MVs as faster burning powders, but hits the 2,820-2,850 fps node in most people's 30-inch barrels. It's a very consistent performer and has known barrel life benefits as it's a very cool burner, like H1000 in this respect. (There is a recently introduced 'high-energy' N565 variant that may suit, but it takes the burning rate a step 'slower' and may therefore be a bit too slow-burning here. I have a can, but have yet to try it in the 284.)

N160 is a much faster burning grade than burning rate tables suggest and is closer to the 4350s than IMR-4831 which it is often paired with. At least one top GB 'Effer' uses it with great success. Despite Viht saying its N100 and equivalent N500 powders share burning rates, N560 is considerably slower burning than N160 in actual applications. On paper it looks a good match, but I don't know anybody using it in the 284. Avoid N150/N550 which on paper are 4350 equivalents - they're not and in the 284 usually produce pressure problems at lower charge weights than expected.

(Also, don't trust QuickLOAD with N150/550/160. With the default Ba values, the program understates pressures and overstates usable charge weights.)

N165 might be a little slow but give it a hot primer for a boost and it could be interesting. (Viht recommend a Rem 9.5 primer for it with their loads)

ATB,

Scrummy

I'm giving N165 a try with my new 284 barrel and have been pretty impressed so far. Berger 180's, BR2's
Here's a couple very recent targets.

I’ve had great success with H4831sc. Have any?
H4831sc has been my best accuracy powder but slowest. RL17 IS my fastest most accurate combined powder. H4350 is second to H4831sc for accuracy and a step faster but still behind the RL17 overall. Those 3 are my choice for the 284. Not sure any of them are readily available at this time. They show up and disappear immediately.

We’ve got plenty of H4350 here but apparently won’t have Bergers for 12month, last big order was sold out in 4 hrs….. anyone wanna trade ..?
