Hodgdon Powders at $50/lb -- New Norm?

Those are some pretty good prices for today's market, especially in a LGS.
Yup,. I found, 2 lb's of, IMR 7828 SSC at, $50 per lb ( No Tax, Hazmat, or, shipping ) Locally and was, very HAPPY, to get, IT !
My .270 WSM gets, kinda Hungry at almost, 67 grains, per shot ! And I like to, PRACTICE Field Positions for, Deer / Elk Hunting to, 650- 700 Yards Prone,.. just, in case ! And I really enjoy, sitting position, over Sticks at, 350-400 yards, "ringing" our 10" steel Plates regularly, as it's,.. SERIOUS,.. Fun !
And, a confidence, builder !

I am just glad I went into this mess with adequate supplies so I don't have to pay desperation prices. As far as 50 bucks a pound as norm, Don't think so, my LGS which was also always a bit high compared to PV and MidSouth has had some various powders in for around 35 - 40, he had priced whatever primers he can get ahold of at $14 - $19 but I expect he is buying them at estate sales and people like myself who went in with several K of each type

I drew a nice, Idaho Elk Tag,.. so an Extra $10.00 per Pound, ain't gonna,.. break me.
BEFORE, this bad Chit, got rolling, I loaded up, on,.. IMR 4350, 4895, StaBall 6.5, H-380, Win 748, etc.
And, enough Bullets for, my .270 wsm, 22-250 and the 2, 6 mm's to last about,.. 5 years or, so.
But, found out that I only had, a couple of Pounds of 7828 to shoot up, 400 qty of, .270 cal, Bergers.
My Policy IS, to ALWAYS HAVE enough, Primers and Powder to "cover" my,.. Bullets !
But, it does look like, "Things" are coming back on, the Market, again !

When things go back down, and they will, i plan to simply buy a couple 8 pounders of each of the three powders i really use, and with the dozens of pounders of oddballs I have already that are going to get me thru, I will have nough for the rest of my life. And I just discovered 4 8 pounders each of 4350, 4895, 4198 and varget in a chest freezer in my uncles place. Not frozen, just kept at a regular temp...all NOS. Since he is 81, and hardly shoots anymore, as of a bypass, gall bladder and bladder cancer diagnosis all in 6 weeks this summer he has been busy mending and i have been busy caring for him, I think I will be all set as he keeps handing me stuff saying "take this home". (I'd rather have him than the stuff though) :(

Hodgdon website has a good deal of Accurate varieties available, as well as a few IMR and Hodgdon. The 8 pounder of 4955 that I got went up though. It's now around what I paid with shipping and hazmat.

Runs around 35.00 to 38.00 a lb for most powders, when in stock, at my local shop, so maybe that is not too bad, with the way things are right now. And they have it for your taking.

Hodgdon’s website has all the various brands under their umbrella that they sell directly to consumers, but every gunpowders are not always available. It just like with all the retailers online or in LG that you have look to to see whats available on a daily bases. It doesn’t look like Hodgdon’s prices have increased, but once shipping and hazmat fee along with sales tax required by some states, your paying close to or even less then some of gun store retailers are charging.

My local gun store has Hodgdon H110, CFE pistol, H335 and Lil Gun for like $29.95 each
That’s what we used to pay around north ga. But checked another LGS today 40 miles from the original and again $49.99 per LB. No matter if you bought a one pounder or one of the few 8’s they had.

Haven't bought powder locally for years. Cheaper for me to buy online than spend half a day driving to the few local retailers in hopes they have what I want, and that was before current pandemic fueled shortages.

In April I ordered 4lbs from Powder Valley, net cost was $43/lb, shipping and hazmat included, delivered to my door.

I bought an 8 lb'er of Superformance at my local gun store in N. Ga a week ago for $249. Bought several lbs. of Retumbo at the mid-30 bucks a pound and 6.5 StaBall and 7828ssc for the same. Primers were on the shelf and a decent amount of projectiles and brass on the shelf also. Decent prices I thought!

My local gun store is not a chain it is a very small one off mom and pop place and I’ve been paying $50 for a couple years on certain powders
If you have been paying that It's your choice but your just hurting everyone else. To me that is local price gouging. But today if you look around men in general have the let's get along and not stand up attitude. This has been reinforced to me when attempting any conversation at matches about supporting conservative values. Women now days are much more outspoken on many subjects which means they have more balls than the modern man. So, back to price gouging. Will only get worse by supporting those who do it. If you were not prepared that's your fault. Big election right before the Covid farce, and guys didn't have the common sense to stock up a year or two ahead. So 338 dude, my rant is not directed to you per se, just my disgust about where we are, how we got here, and how many have responded over the last year. How sbout everyone that reads this call you senator and congressman this week and tell them its not sbout them. It's about there job to represent those who voted for them and not the stinking lousy corrupt party. Pick any party, they are all in the same bed. Rant over....for now. Almost....let it sit on the shelf for 6 months. There will be some good sales.

Why are you people paying these prices for powder if you would have gotten it when Obama was elected the second time like I did, because I knew this was coming. If you quit buying the price will come down.
So stick together like the Democrats do and we will be good.

Joe Salt

I don’t think those buying at high prices really care about any advise or opinions others may have. They have tunnel vision. I think what will happen is that they will buy much more than their needs and eventually stop, how much powder can a guy use? So production gets ramped up, this insatious demand eventually dies and prices get back to where they should be but it’s gonna take awhile for that to play out just like it did during the Obummer years. 2018 & 2019 were just getting back to where prices should be and the supply lines were pretty full, you could pretty much get anything you wanted right before covid. This time is a little different with all the new gun owners and people learning to reload but supply will eventually catch up to demand, even this nutty demand. primers seem to be hitting the shelves more and more, this disappear fast just like powder did for the last year but powder is slowing down more and more.
