Need a Mossberg Gunsmith

Ccrider

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a Mossberg 51 22LR that I really like. It is having cycling problems where the new round is nose diving when being pushed forward by the bolt and causing a jam. My gunsmith is stomped this. He says the elevator, ramp and springs are all within spec. He has tried 15 different types of ammo also.

Do any of you guys have any thoughts about this or maybe know someone that is intimately involved with these old rifles? Thanks.

Pics of the mag area would help. A couple showing the progression of the shell as it’s pushed forward and dives. Give me something to work with?
Thanks. I will post some pictures when I pick the gun up from my smith.

Some other questions that you need to be thinking about.

Did it always feed well then suddenly stop?
Does it not feed with a full magazine?
Did it jam sometimes then progressively got worse?

These are just things to ponder, then throw them back in the mix when the thread gets back on track

Hose it down with WD 40 . Please no debate on WD 40 TY.

I came to the conclusion the oil I was using [old 3in1] was too heavy/stiff. I took out the bolt and, using WD40 re-lubed everything that moved and slipped in a grove. I re-tested as before using 3 rounds and everything functioned perfectly. I immediately followed up with a repeat 3 round test. Again, no problems. Smooth as silk

When my old Winchester automatic started doing this it just need a very good cleaning..... After stripped and cleaned up very well it stopped and is working fine again.... It gets leaded up bad and won't feed of course it takes awhile for it to get that bad.... I bet I put a million rounds through that gun growing up....

Yes. It is a tubular magazine in the butt stock. Will post some pictures when I get it back from my smith.

try cleaning the bolt face with a brass brush and solvent go at it with with some force, you won't hurt it. Be sure the extractor move freely and is not preventing the rim of the cartridge from sliding under which woul cause the round to nose dive.

Carbon and powder residue built up over many years has put many .22 semi's out of comission until they were aggressively cleaned.
