308 Project Just About Finished

I have been building a 308 “just for the heck of it” rifle, a lot of the parts purchased right here an AccurateShooter.

The HS Precision stock complete with all bottom metal, the Krieger 1-10 Fluted REM Varmint Taper Barrel Blank, the Picatinny Rail we’re all bought here. I left the barrel at 26 inches because that is as short as I could make it and still have a non fluted section at the muzzle.

The scope rings are a set of 30mm US Optics that I have had for several years. I bought the action at the Shilen Swap Meet Along with a no neck turn 308 match reamer with .095 throat.

i trued the action threads face and recoil lug and bedded the stock.

I also bought here on AccurateShooter 700 Speer 168 grn Match Bullets to shoot in it As well as 100 new Lapua cases.

All I I lack is a good variable scope.

here are a few pics

Jackie, Uline is great with pricing, but their shipping prices are atrocious!
Nice looking rifle. I've just joined the 308 crowd and I'm really happy with the results.

Everyone should have at least one 308. I once came very close to a 1/4 minute agg with a 308 LV rifle; at a registered match. A .26 something, as I recall. This was around 1980. I'll confess that the recoil was fatiguing! WH

There's a nice Bushnell elite 4200 6x24 in classifieds that would go nicely on top.

I pieced together a 308. Bought a Remington(HS Precision) stock from here, bottom metal from here, Had the doner action I bought long ago as a 7MM/08. The barrel is a Brux 12 twist I had put on an across the course shooter, burned the first 4" pretty bad, but there was enough to cut off and have enough shoulder to use. Very good shooter, always at the ready next to my back door for anything in Virginia that may come along.

Jackie and Wayne, I have too much in mine, but it is kinda like Wayne's. Pieces I picked up over the years. It does have a new Rem SS receiver, bolt is fluted and Dan Armstrong tigged another bolt handle to it, 3 pos safety, The barrel was a 11.25 twist 32inch Palma barrel off a Palma rifle. It is cut to 23.5" Obermeyer barrel in a #5 Shilen contour. It has a Shilen trigger, and a bedded Greyboe stock. It has been cerrokoted. I'm installing a 2.5x-25x-42 March scopr with Alaska Arms scope bases and rings.

I'm in the process of a lighter weight 308W build myself. The components are a Mack Bros EVO action (700 foot print) in a factory Remington LVSF ADL stock which I'll repillar. The barrel will be the LVSF profile which is a Remington Magnum Sporter about .620 at the muzzle @ 22" and twisted 1:12. Chamber will be a plain vanilla 308W for no-turn Lapua cases. There's a couple of Shilen standard triggers here which are nice on a huntin' gun, some Talley LW rings, and a little Burris Compact 4-12.

I also recently got a few 308’s, having sold a decent 308 Win 70 featherweight to a friend. Saw a deal online for Mauser M12 black impact rifles ($1500-$2000 retail) for $500. Couldn’t resist and bought a couple. 20” fluted barrels, 60 deg bolt throw and 2.2 lb trigger set from the factory. Great little rifles and I wouldn’t be able to build one for that. The two I’ve shot have been easily sub MOA and I’m very happy with them. Good all around hunting rifles for sure.

An 8x32 with a plain cross hair would be ideal.
A 30MM 8-32 with a plain cross hair is tough to find. Most scopes in that range have needlessly complex reticles that make me seasick....tacti-cool at it's worst. ;)

I'd take a good look at the Sightron SIII 8-32X56 model FXHR.

Hope this helps. -Al

I tried shooting my 308 last week end at 200 yards, could not keep it under an inch. So I decided to build a bolt on 2 3/4 wide attachment for the front of the stock to help stabilize the rifle. I also took the barrel off a cut it back to 24 inches.

I stopped off at the range this afternoon and worked with some N150 at 100 yards. I settled in on 45.0 grns with the 168 grn Speer Match, which on my Chrony gave an average velocity of 2700 FPS.

I got it shooting ok, decided to shoot three 5-shot groups. As a Benchrest Shooter, shooting a full loaded 308 for agg is not the most fun thing to do. But by holding it hard against the stop with my shoulder as I watched my flags, it was manageable.

Here are the 3 groups. At this time, I have an honest 1/2 inch rifle. I think I can play with the seating depth some to get some of the horizontal out.

Since this is the only bullet I have right now, (I bought 700 of them on this Site‘s classifieds), I may have to settle for this. The only other powders I have that are suitable are N135 and Accurate 2495.image.jpgABDB6339-AA88-4FDB-BB52-A595A9BB34A8.jpeg

I am also going to Bush the back of the bolt to tighten it up in way of the trigger.

Jackie I was playing with a Savage factory 308 a few years ago and running IMR4895 with 150gr. SMK's I got down to 3/8ths for 5 shots at 100. No where near good enough for SR BR but more than good enough for hunting or plinking.

I don’t have

I don’t have any 4895 at this time, next range visit I am going to try some Accurate 2495, which is their answer to 4895.

I ran 42gr. 0.018 off the lands pretty much stacked them one on top of the other, this with a model 10 LE 20" Savage bull.
It is still in the safe maybe I'll take it out and play around some more. When I can get some bullets.

Jackie
I have 400 Berger 155.5 fullbore match bullets if you want to try them.
Have 175 Sierra match kings too.
