220 Swift - .22 Cal 55GR. Sierra Blitzking

Hello,

I've a new project that I'm fiddling with.

Remington 700, trued action, Kreiger barrel, 1:12 twist in 220 Swift.

The project: work up a load for 55gr SBK's using Norma Brass.

I think H380 will be my first choice of powders as it is currently shooting 55Gr VMAX bullets with 41Gr of H380 (also using Norma Brass). I'm curious to hear if other shooters have worked up something with the 55GR SBK's that works well on a similar setup.

Thanks,

Reloading Bum

Yes, around 40-42gr of WW760 or H414 Rem 9 1/2 primer in either Norma or Winchester brass works in the current Swift I have. This one also shows an affinity for R-17 also, but haven't gotten around to nailing down a load for it.

Other Swifts I've owned over the years liked the 4064 load of around 38-39 grains. The usual cautions on load development apply........ work up to these loads carefully. Swift is still the king of the varmint rifles. WD

While I never owned a 220 Swift, great varmint caliber, I did use H380 in a 22 250 which shot terrific group wise, producing groups in the sub 1/4 moa range with a factory, Rem 700 rifle.

I stop using it many years ago due to pressure surges in the field in hot weather, 90*+, while hunting eastern ground hogs. So if you intend to use it in different temperature extremes, especially in the field, I'd be vigilant of pressure signs. Especially be cautious keeping the cartridges out of direct sunlight in hot weather.

Never owned a 220 Swift. Shot a friends. 22-250 is vastly superior.
That was intended as a joke, right?

I have a 22-250 and like them as well as anyone but to say they're "vastly superior" to the 220 Swift and actually mean it is just silliness. We can get Lapua brass for our 22-250's and the Swift folks can't, that's about the only thing superior it has going for it.

I liked H4895 with 50 to 53 gr bullets. Then RL15 came out showing slightly better speed & accuracy in my rifle. Like K22 said above, I noticed pressure spikes with accompanying accuracy degradation on July/August afternoons with H380.

Ya, Redrock had to be stirring a pot with tongue in cheek...right? I have both. I am drawn to the swift.

Old school cool.

K22 is right...H380 peaks in HOT weather.

But if you start off under, when its hot just hold lower!!!

Another vote for good ol' Win 760/H414; however, with 50 gr. SBKs (instead of 55) and Norma brass. First and only combo I've run in a Ruger 77 Mk. II Swift with 26-inch, 1:14" twist barrel.
FWIW, if I had the "luxury" of owning a 12 twist-barreled .220 Swift, the bullet I would definitely try first would be the 53 grain Hornady V-Max. Only reason I keep a .22-250 around is because my Savage with that rate will stabilize that great longer/higher BC bullet. Out of a Swift, it should be even more fun!

My load of choice for my Savage single shot, 12 twist with a S.S.S. trigger is: 38 IMR 4064 52 Sierra. Average velocity is 3844 from my Pact chronograph. Although the S.D. is high @ 27. I don't care as it shoots fantastic. Always shoots under .5moa. Also use Norma brass.
I don't understand why someone claimed the 22-250 is vastly superior to the Swift. I also own a 22-250 and it's great but I sure wouldn't say it's vastly superior. I've shot a lot of prairie dogs over the years, and I really couldn't say which was better.

Also shooting the 55 grain Blitz Kings in my Swift. Super accurate and explosive, I’m using H414 or the old Swift standby IMR 4064.
Also have been shooting the 22-250 for many years. The Swift will always beat the 250 in equal length barrels loaded to equal pressures. Any difference in accuracy will depend on the individual rifle.
Speed sells... and I’m buying!

I have two Swifts 1x12 and 1x8 . Both like 35 grs. BL-C2 52 gr Sierras To 60 Grs. Just my two cents Tommy Mc. Both 28 in tubes.

H414 has been a great performer in many of my swifts, I’ve had a few. I mostly shoot 55 grainers but I’ve used 60 grain partitions to great effect on bigger stuff. Swifts are fun! It might look a little funny but it still holds its own today.

H380 is my powder of choice in all my swifts. I tried some RL15 and although it grouped great, as the temp went up so did the point of impact. by as much as several feet at distance, I think the swift was designed around a 48gr bullet, so 50gr nosler bt is my favorite.

you sure have a lot of projects that you are fiddling with. I know most people say "you can't have to many guns" but, the older I get, the more I know, everyone has their limits.
oh, what the hell, I could probably buy just one more.
we'll have to talk some time, I'm just over in Lincoln

Thanks for chiming in. You're relatively close.

I have a PD Hunt coming up in a few weeks and it will be warm, so aside from keeping my barrels cool using cooling gadgets, having a half dozen rifles should also help. Learned the hard way on a previous hunt only bringing two rifles.

Howdy !

I'm w/ WyleMD, Nakneker & Bangs...... WW760 / H414 gets my vote.

I have had good success using FED Large Magnum Rifle Match along w/ those powders, in .22-250,
.220 Swift; and my wildcat .22-35 Remington. 24 - 26" barrels.

I myself prefer the Hornady 55SX over all other .224' cal varmint bullets, for use on groundhogs; when shooting cases in this capacity range ( 500yd and below ).

But hey.... that's just me.

With regards,
357mag

I've tried a lot of things when it comes to cooling my barrels, but when it's hot outside, it only takes a couple of shots before your barrel becomes too hot to handle. a wet towel draped on the barrel is what I use for high volume shooting in the heat.
