U.S. Army's New Sniper Rifle?

The Good News is that these things actually Shoot great. I work at a rifle range and see a couple guys come through that have several barrels for the one rifle. One guy has a 338 barrel and 6.5 Creed and 308 barrel all well below sub MOA for all three barrels with good factory ammo.
The other guy has one in 260 i believe and 308. Again all barrels shoot very well. This guy hand loads hos ammo.
We have one that we rent out in 338 and it also is a little over a Half MOA rifle with Lapua Factory ammo.
Trigger is fantastic as well. For a change...

My only question is why did they "Ham-string" the .308 with a 20" barrel , when any F Class shooter on the planet knows that 28" should be a minimum , for a thousand yard shot , with any accuracy . Unless they "NEW" thinking is that old caliber is only for Urban Ops , and a 300 yard shot . You don't have to have a Super Magnum for a thousand yard kill . Just a good trigger puller , with a good .308 ....

Apparently the mission for the .308 is strictly for training purposes and I guess a 20" barrel is plenty good for training at the vast majority of military training sites.

See this YouTube video and the explanation starts at 8:30 of this video.

Oh ; I see . More of the same thinking , by the same people , who turned the AR-10 , .308 into a over-sized B.B. gun . That worked out so well for us in The Nam

. . . and I'm still shooting a .308. ;)

And yeah, that thinking is for anti personnel sniper effectiveness out to 1500 meters/1640 yds with the Norma 300 Magnum. As much as I like the .308, I feel they've got a winner in the 3 barrel option for various missions. Even so, I too don't see why they just didn't go with a longer 308 barrel (like 26").

. . . maybe because the shorter barrel is less likely to be confused with the others when pulling it out of the case??? :p

A lot more goes into an integrated system like this than just selecting a rifle, scope, suppressor, etc., and stuffing them into a transit (hard) case. Take the M110 SASS (Semi-Automatic Sniper System), which I notice this new rifle is NOT replacing. In addition to all the pre-contract admin work, you get the rifle, scope, mount, suppressor, bipod, sling, numerous magazines, three different cleaning kits (I dunno why three), repair parts, special tools, a soft case/drag bag, and probably some additional stuff that I've forgotten about, all in a really cool and durable hard transit case. Cost? About $13K, last I checked. Also included in that price is technical support and training by the manufacturer (Knight's Armament). Could one assemble a comparable (but not identical) kit by piecing it together, for less money? Doubtless, if you wanted to expend the time and hassle of dealing with a dozen different manufacturers/vendors.

On a related note, I wonder what Uncle is gonna do with all those surplus M2010s, M40A5s and 6s, etc.? I know they would never, ever consider surplusing and selling off M107s (except maybe to LEAs in Cali, to whom Barrett will not sell).

That's chump change for the government, they have a endless amount of money to spend thanks to the tax payers. But all aside.....our men and women should have the best of what ever they need, they are putting their lives on the line for you and our country.
and the liberal left.

The Navy fairly recently selected Stiller actions for one of their limited issue sniper rifles - and Remington was still in business at the time.

That was 11 years ago:

SOCOM MK 13 Mod 5 Sniper Rifle. The SOCOM MK 13 is a bolt-action sniper rifle in use with the US Navy SEALs and other special operations units. The rifle is based on the Remington 700 long action, fires .300 Winchester Magnum (WinMag) rounds and is assembled from parts at NSWC Crane.

Just so nobody gets the idea that I was bangin on their new toy , I was only questioning the poor decision on the 20" barrel for the .308 set-up . And I totally agree that at least 26" would have been preferable to 20" . Though it always seems very apparent to those of us with "Field Experience" , that the people making these decisions have little , to none . At least ; if a Shooter in the field happened to have his weapon set up for the .308 , and situation happened that a 800 - 1,000 yard shot was needed , you ain't gonna take that shot with a 20" barrel , knowing your 1 shot "HIT" probability was not going to be very high . My first two years of TR were shot with a 26" barrel , and though I could get decent scores at 1,000 , I fully grasped the limitations of a 26" barrel at that distance . So let's not go down that 20" barrels are great , road .
