Grizzly G509G Lathe

It's pretty simple to lift the barrel and place a pad on the bearing on bottom, roughly center the barrel, both lower screws 45 degrees from vertical, place other lower one, then back off top screws and place the top 2 pads and tighten until bearing has the pad captured. Then you can roll the spindle and pads can't slip out due to indent in them. Easier said than done. I've parted barrels and never had anything slip, so it works and all the hold down you require.
ok thanks

Look at the threading chart in the pictures on the 0824. You are changing gears for most imp. threads which is annoying.

If I was buying new I wouldn’t want to have to do that. It appears to be the same as my 0750G in terms of gear changes.

What do you mean changing gears?

Look at the table for what you have to select on the gearbox to get 8,16,25,28 TPI threads on that machine. In addition to the gear box selections it requires you to actually change some of the end gears out.

Doing it once in a while isn’t too bad, but the grizzly machines appear to be set up for not changing gears for most metric threads, but you -do- have to change gears for most imperial.

I didn’t realize this when I bought my 0750G used. For the price I can live with it, but if I was buying new I wouldn’t consider a machine like this, certainly not a higher price point.

This is the one major changes that the precision matthews machines make afaict, they change out the gearing so that you don’t have to change gears for most imperial, but instead you do for metric.

That's not good. You mean you have to get out tools and change gears?

Good grief:). If they are a greasy mess than you should change what you are doing. They only need a little drizzle of oil occasionally when they are used.

And changing gears is a half a cup of coffee.

I think some of you guys are getting soft:).

Urbanrifleman,

The above is the gears of a PM 1440 BV. I REALLY like the variable speed and the DRO. The grizzly that you referenced isn't variable. Below is the gear change sequence for the different threads.

It is very possible that Precision Mathews has changed the gearing since my lathe was made (about 14 years ago) so that imperial threading would require less gear changes. See the metric doesn't require quite as many changes.

I guess I am lazy and spoiled. My Acra Hardinge tool room lathe has electronic threading. Any pitch, no gears, no noise.

There are some DIY electronic lead screw conversions out there though. If I did more metric on PM-1340GT, it might be worth exploring.

My friend who is a gunsmith just said I can buy his like brand new G0824 with DRO, as he like his non DRO G0824 better....

The LORD certainly does work in my life when I least expect it. :)

Wow.

Made in china im sure. Its not like a regular south bend its just got the name on it imported by grizzly. Lee gardner did a write up on his on here and i think he was selling it last i heard. I think they work fine

I believe it is Taiwanese. Since Shiraz bought the rights to the SBL brand, he has been sourcing them from Taiwan.

Yes on chinese for the GS, the PM's with T are Taiwan and I think all have 5 year warranty. PM-1340GT and PM-1440GT are Taiwan. I think the manual for the South Bend was done in USA.

What's not on PM website is this, PM1440TV. 9 inch bed instead of the 1440GT, and the 1340GT, and 1236T, which all share the same bed width, a little over 7 inches. 5HP Motor with VFD, and DRO Pros DRO. It has a solid cast iron base, instead of sheetmetal. All these T suffixed lathes from PM come Liang Dei, the same manufacturer used by Eisen.
