COVID-19 Vaccine -- Over 70 Age

Not open for further replies.
I am 66. Had my first dose. Second scheduled for March 5th. Everyone one else in my family including my 85 year old mother have already gotten their second dose. Nobody in my group had any reaction to the shots. That includes my mother who is on chemotherapy for lymphoma.

For me I give a sigh of relief.

Can't understand why anyone would choose not to take it.

76 years old with a wife 72 and recovering from cancer. NO WAY can we even get signed up to get the shots. Wife is on every site imaginable and each time - no more openings. Week after week it is always ... "next week". Two friends our age died from the virus. Another did recover but has nasty complications. Our kids and even a grandkid have had it with little issue. For us it would probably be fatal. Hope not to get it and find out but will not hide from doing things either.

Here in Florida there are lots and lots of us, called elderly, and unable to get the shots. It's the way it is.
I don't know where you are in Florida, but in the Miami area it's very easy to get the vaccine if you're over 70. My wife and I got it at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She had no reaction and I had a sore arm for a day or so. You can also get it at the new Marlins stadium without getting out of your car.

I'm scheduled for April but concerned about the rare but deadly side effect, thrombocytopenia, which was reported in the New York Times and some hematologists are warning about. However my doctor says the risks of contracting the virus and its affects far out weighs the risks of vaccine side affects.

Hope she's right but I feel like I'm on the "Edmond Fritzgerald" :(:(:(:(:(
Buck up sonny and listen to your doc! :) Do you really put any stock in the New York Times???

And the ones who don’t get vaccinated will have no qualms about running up $100,000’s in hospital bills that the taxpayers will pick up!!

Anyone 65 or over or anyone with comorbidity's that doesn't get the vaccine is a moron. Remember, Charles Darwin, in his Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life), put forth the idea of "survival of the fittest".

Seems a bit disorganized here in Colorado.
65+ and I'm on half a dozen lists.
I'm in the same age group in CO. On Feb 8 when I became eligible, I thought I will be aggressive at trying to get vaccinated. On the 9'th I got scheduled for today at 10:30. First shot done, 2'nd one already scheduled.

Initially I intended to not get the vaccine. Thought my exposure potential is pretty low, and I'll continue my safe practices (which include staying away from those that choose not to wear a mask). But changed my mind. Didn't see any upside in not getting the vaccine, and lots of downside. And I never get a flu shot.

CaptainMal:
Im in Gulf county FL got my first 25 days ago and will get the second Tuesday.
Health Dept here is awesome (very organized ) very easy to get on the list ( text or email) and they keep you informed continuously.

I live on the border of Manatee and Hillsborough Co., just 30 miles south of Tampa. There is a place somewhere in Tampa, University Mall (wherever that is) you can sign up for. I did and nothing. Been a month. Far as I know other than Sun City residents, there is no other place to go. Plus, I do not like and rarely drive into Tampa. I hate cities.

Wife has us together on two lists in Sarasota. Nothing. If you are not in the VA system, a nursing home or "first responder" ... nothing. Even asked my doctor last week at a normal check-up. Nothing. If you do not have and use internet, I bet there is literally no chance.

Thanks for the compliment - no one has called me sonny in 70 years.

The New Your Times carried the story but it was one of the hematology web sites that expounded on the woman who came down with this condition. There are several things they believe can trigger this condition but they haven't established a direct link to the Covid vaccines yet. However this woman developed it the next day after being vaccinated and a 59 years old Doctor died of it 16 days after the vaccination. With the number of people already vaccinated this appears to be isolated instances.

I'm not sure what "buck up" means but at 73 and surviving a deadly disease 52 years ago and the Vietnam era draft into the Army I consider the time since to be all gifted free time on the planet. Would like a few more years to hunt ground hogs but I've lived a full life so if my number is up, it's up. I do plan to get vaccinated so I guessed I'm "bucked up." Have a nice day.

Maybe this will help

We're 50 miles east of Tampa and in our experience the phone works better than the internet.

When Polk county announced they were accepting reservations my wife did the phone thing which meant calling over and over for hours before she finally got through. I went the internet route and it was easy-peasy. We both asked for shots for both of us. She got a call back in about a week with a date and time. About ten days after we had the first shot I finally got a call from my internet reservation.

I was really impressed with how smoothly it all went. Possibly a ten minute wait then a 15 minute sit to make sure you don't have an adverse reaction. I also learned that the folks working there were all volunteers. They were BayCare Health employees but this was in addition to their regular job. Kudos to them.

My wife made an appointment for her Mother, 80 years old. It took 2 weeks she received her first shot last Monday. We are in Suwannee County, North Central Florida.

Wife and i got our Phizer second shots yesterday. Everything seems to be well organized here in Indiana. When our age group (70+) was given the green light I went to the state websight and typed in our zip code. They listed the sights by distance from your zip starting with your county. The third one down had openings and was only 30 miles away. Both visits to the Logansport High School gym were a breeze. Very little soreness in the arm and no extra side effects from the second shot at least not yet.

I'm 71 ; in very good health , and my wife has been wearing her lap-top out trying to get us a appointment here in the Phoenix area , for over a month now . . No luck yet . Guess all the Illegals take precedent over American taxpayers out here under Komisar Bi-dumbs new immigration programs . Starting to wonder why they ask for your zip code when trying to schedule a appointment . North Phoenix area seems to be at the back of line .
