What am I wanting here -- 6PPC Wildcat?

I used a 6mmAR case (6mm Grendel) to have my reamer made by JGS. The reamer was made with no throat, I ordered a separate throating reamer to get the throat exactly where I wanted. I went with a 1-8 Bartlein barrel and ended up using 90 gr. Berger bullets. The set up is plenty accurate out to the furthest I have shot it, 300 yds. If I were doing it again I think I would go with a 13.5 twist and use lighter bullets. While very accurate I don't think the 90 gr bullets are a great advantage at shorter ranges, other similar rifles I have that are faster like my Vartarg seem to do better. I believe part of the reason is they spend less time bucking the wind.

Mic McPherson developed and patented some interesting designs around the 6ppc. The 6.5mm/60SMc might be a candidate to consider for deer. Less volume but more velocity than a 6.5 x 284 due to greater combustion efficiency and might could meet your criteria for "stupid accurate".

Left to right: 20 Vartarg, 6.5 Grendel, 6PPC, 6BR, 6BRXD, 30 BR...

I have an itch for something that's a 200 to 300 yard laser beam, stupid accurate, no recoil... smaller than a 6BR case capacity, but more than a fireball case. This leaves me with 220 Russian variants of Grendel cases, PPC etc... I like the neck length of the 6PPC, I dont want much more capacity than a 6 PPC, or the shoulder blown forward as much as the grendel....

Next I want a steeper shoulder than the 6PPC.. Ackley Improved, not much body taper... (like the 6 BRXD pictured)...

I'm dang near wanting a 6PPC Ackley Improved... steeper shoulder angle and straight body... but then shortening the case with the shoulder back .1000 or so... would be ideal.... basically take away the added case capacity of AI-ing the case... maybe shortening it is going too far...

What wildcats am I toying with here besides a 6PPCAI?

Why I want this? No big reason... I just want a stupid accurate little sharp shoulder straight wall case to shoot deer in the head with that looks cool and is fun to shoot with not much felt recoil at all...
Reinventing the wheel is not always the best option, trying to shoot smaller than a 6PPC has been tried hundreds if not thousands of times and guess what? They are still shooting that 6PPC and winning, that game won't care what shoulder you have, it's still dead. Good luck in your search and let us know what you find.

6mm Grinch
Necked down grendel with 40 degree shoulder

My choice would be the .22 Waldog, hands down. Not easy to make cases, but man does it shoot!

Paul,
I am going to get a Waldog chambered up for my LV rifle. What powder should I be on the hunt for? At this time, I am thinking a 52gr FB bulllet. Thoughts?
Thanks

CW,

Mine was a tac driver with VV133 and a 52 Berger FB with 205m primers. Around 3400 fps. When my 6PPC dies I will rebarrel to another 22 Waldog! An amazing little cartridge. Have fun!

It sounds like you just want to wildcat and form brass. Custom reamer, custom dies, forming dies, etc.

Sounds like a fairy tale that I have heard...
The 6mmAR is Too Big
The 6PPC is Too Small
With it's shortened shoulder position - The 6ARC sounds just right ????

So im looking at basically a 6-40 tyger here... thats pretty much nails what I'm thinking about...
The L-6-40 Tyger fits what you described except you might want to trim the neck a little so the neck length would be the same as the 6 PPC. I think that would be exactly what you described in your original post.

How is the brass made? I cant remember...
Sniper,

Trim .100 from neck length, push shoulder back .100. Problem is now the neck is half neck and half shoulder! Can you say giant step in neck! Very hard to get a perfect neck, to say the least. So, having a lathe, I bored the id, and then turned the od. Would be a real pain without access to a lathe. But, mine outshot anything I have ever owned before or since. I will do another one, when my 6PPC dies.

For 22 Waldog you have the father of the waldog : Dan Dowling: Bet he can answer any questions you have and give you more tips and info than most people have forgotten.
PS. Good news he lives real, real close to you.
