Returning to Guns After Leaving California

California....beautiful place, mostly good folks, but run by a colossal bunch of completel libtards. I saw this back in 1975 when I left for good, and have never looked back. I've carried legally here since the day I left the communist state, can leave a store ten minutes after buying a handgun, and can go shoot on BLM land five minutes from the house any time I choose.

There ARE alternatives to being held hostage in CA.

Except now that drugs are legal here in Oregon, this state will decline even more. If thing go right I'll be out of Oregon, where I was born in a couple of months.

I live in California. I shoot 2/3 days a week. 10 days a month. Shot a 600 f class practice match last Saturday. Then some skeet Sunday. Off this week and I’ve shoot 1000, 600, f practice. Hunted some coyotes with my AR. Shot alittle 9mm. Going to shoot a 22 shiloette match this Saturday. Reloading like crazy. I live in Imperial County. “The Desert” 45 in the morning 70 is the high. Light winds everyday so far. I can see the range from my house. Born and raised here and been a shooter hunter my whole life. I don’t expect to live a whole lot longer but I expect I’ll be shooting till the end. I bought 500 9mm at my local Big 5 a week ago, took about 10 minutes. Im done with politics, negative thoughts and worry. Life is good. Cheers Mike

Best wishes leaving the "Left Coast". I'm afraid with the new administration about to take over, the nation may be headed in the same direction as CA. I hope I'm wrong but they can use a variety of devious schemes to make firearm ownership a severe financial burden to accomplish their ultimate goal of disarming the American citizen without pushing for an out right ban. It would be in essences, a defacto ban.

I remember fly fishing the Yellowstone and people would ask us “What kind of fishing rod is that?” 1967 or 68? Used to walk out our back door after school to get a pheasant for dinner. I usually had one in under a 1/2 hour.:)
By the way, what state did you land in?

Retired in Arizona, just west of Phoenix, from California . . . though I grew up in S. Oregon where most of my family resides. Likewise, did a lot of fly fishing in the rivers and streams and also fished for salmon when it was in season there. . . and would get pheasants in the fields behind the back of the house as well (good times). When my kids were old enough, I took them to some of what used to be my favorite fishing spots that we still had to hike to, but recreational boating has pretty much ruined the fishing in the river (no boaters respecing fishermen as they go by).

Do you know the difference between a fishing rod and a fishing pole? About $200.

In Delaware, if you pull a gun out of your trunk people stop and stare or run.
In Texas, they’ll wander over and say “Nice! What ya have there!”

That is the Oregon I remember. I too grew up in Southern Oregon, shooting, hunting, flyfishing. In those days Portland was second only to San Francisco in terms of being the best city. Oregon is now a mere shadow of its former self. As soon as our house sells we are moving to Idaho, where we hope to have a Red wall against the blue infection that is destroying our nation.

I am the OP. Thanks to all for the comments. To address a few things stated or asked...

I am in Nevada now. Yes, a purplish state, with a Dem governor, and some new gun laws, but a heck of an improvement vs California! Wife did not want to be too far from family, so where we are was a best solution for us.

I am absolutely NOT going to bring any "Californication" to my new place. No way. Before moving, we very clearly saw the apprehension Nevadans had over Californians coming here. It was palpable. I told them I came here to not only escape the destructive values and attitudes that dominante CA, but also to come to a place that embraces the same values as I. Nevadans who heard me knew it was true and sincere (not lip service), and you could all but hear their sigh of relief. California has not served to move me to the left, but instead has reinforced my conservative values, pushing me to leave the state. I really do prefer it here, and like the way things are. Here, I naturally fit in and want this place to remain just the way it is. And yes, I voted as my comments might suggest, and had my sign out front like many of my neighbors.

I am aware of the aggressive CA tax board. Pretty much severed all ties with CA, so they will have a hard time claiming I still have some residency there. And yes, our dog is here, with new health plans, docs, cars registered here, etc.

A few asked me to comment on the progress of the AR-10/6.5x47. I will do that. My box of parts needs a barrel, gas block, gas tube, stock, scope mount, and a scope. It will be built on a Noveske N6 lower receiver. Not sure who I will use for a barrel, but it no doubt will have to be something custom made to shoot the 6.5 x 47. I am hoping that the AR-10 does not beat up my Lapua brass too badly!

Some will say do not give up on CA, but honestly, being a gun loving, conservative there and fighting the liberal masses is analogous to one of those WW2 Japanese soldiers on an island still fighting, unaware the war ended.

This move was really hard, with Covid complicating things greatly. And then, less than 24 hours after the movers left, we were in a major car accident, requiring jaws-of-life to get my wife out and to the hospital and our car destroyed. Wife had minor injuries, but may have neck problems (attorney handling). Was not our fault. Makes for a rough start. But, it was all still worth it.

Phil

Best wishes to you Phil. If you need shooter resources in NV, I'm sure there are at least a few forum members here who are in your area. We're keeping you and your wife in our non-denominational prayers (the only kind approved in California by the socialist/elite in charge there) in this challenging transition, but it will be worth it.

The battle for California has indeed been lost. The war for liberty in the US is underway. NV and AZ need to return to red, or the entire far west political structure has fallen to the lunacy of liberalism. Like cancer, rust, termites, and mold, it's ever creeping. Misery loves company!

Back to NV: Check out the Palomino range if you haven't already: https://palominogunclub.org/

And something I heard when we contemplated a move like yours: "Reno is certainly not hell, but it's close enough to see Sparks."

We went to Cali to see the redwoods. I was aware of some regulations. I was wearing pocket T with screen print of 1000 yard bench gun and range logo. People would ask me why I wore that shirt. As if it was dangerous to have a picture of a rifle on your body. That was 10 years ago. I’m under the impression that I have no idea how bad it really is. Just wanted to share my experience, so everyone knows what can becoming if we sit back and allow it.

Sad but true. I am in the Midwest and I see the creeping from both East and West coasts. Depressing ☹️

I am stuck here for now and my friends are slowly retiring and leaving because they can't afford the cost.
How in the hell you ask...$130K The BS just never stops. You could buy a really nice travel trailer for $10-$20K which is still ridiculous but not as outrageous. Consider also the $650K proposal for permanent housing per unit. Unbelievable.shedd.jpgsheddd.jpg ?

I actually got sued and taken to court for wearing my cousin's gunsmith shirt. It has a picture of a revolver pointed at you. Poor guy said I was making terrorist threats toward him. Of course it got dismissed, but not after spending lots of dollars on a lawyer.

Its a tough situation being a republican here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, but I am choosing to stay here to fight the good fight and keep some of the best shooting going in this country. I have no less than 7 ranges within 1 hour drive of me (maybe more), I can shoot 1K f/class, Steel Challenge, Silhouette, Service Rifle, indoor rimfire, shotgun games, air gun, 3gun, USPSA, and more. All while living in the middle of a big city. I get that city life isn't for everyone, that's fine, but everyone saying all of us should leave really need to think about that when the president elect is recruiting CA politicians for the national level and you'd wish there were more of us here to try and change the outcome before it gets there.

Another huge Trump rally here today, It's hard to believe Republicans didn't do better this election.

Don't forget that Bezos moved to TX from CA and brought his billions (probably to buy politicians). I would not tag him as a conservative.

....
Good analogy! I like it!

The best a conservative CA resident can do is to be a 'spy' in hostile territory reporting actual news of CA politicians' continual efforts to reduce citizen rights to the outside world.
