Returning to Guns After Leaving California

Has been about 7-1/2 months since I last posted anything here, but am pleased to return, with a renewed interest in firearms. My interest had been waning due to severe limitations in California. Limits on gun selection, parts, vendor avoidance of California, shrinking places to shoot, waiting periods, permits, special fees, ludicrous ammo purchase rules, and much more was sucking the life out of a dying interest. I had enough. Enough of the gun nonsense and enough of CA idiocy in general. My wife and I moved to another state. Good Lord, it is like escaping prison. It is hard to see just how much of a prison you are in until you are out of it and free. The restrictions are far less in our new place, and so is the overt hostility toward gun owners.

Now, I am far more free. I can fully immerse myself in firearms and reloading with few limits, reversing my waning interest. There are some restrictions here, but a far cry from CA. If anyone here lives in California and has contemplated moving, do it. For us, it was very hard, especially getting work done on the house we sold prior to selling, and doing all this in the midst of Covid restrictions. But, the newfound freedom is worth it.

Now, to see about resurrecting my old AR-10/6.5x47 Lapua project, left stalled due to CA laws. Can't wait to get it together and fire it alongside my 6.5x47 bolt gun at a long distance not too far out.

LOL Exactly what I was going to say! Enjoy your new freedom and as you know it wasn't "free". God Bless.

We move to California in 2008 to help out with my wife's aging parents. Having lived there before, I sort of knew what to expect. However, the extent Ca had become anti-gun was an eye-opener. When I started my job, co-workers asked about my hobbies. I made the mistake of telling them I was into target shooting and reloading. Most of them were ok with it, but my supervisor was anti-gun, he told me I couldn't talk about it at work, stating that it made he and others nervous and distrustful of me. I asked him what he thought I was going to do. He said he didn't know and that was the problem. I reminded him of the clean background check I had as a condition of employment. Freedom of speech did not seem to matter either. I kept my hobby on the down low from then on. I liked the job and stayed there 6 years. Alot of shooters came out off the woodwork as word got around that I was a shooter. But we all had to keep it on the down low.

I moved back to VA from California 6 years ago. What a difference. The county I live in encourages concealed carry and has classes at the Sheriff's dept for a nominal fee. The upcoming classes are advertised in the local newspapers and on the county website. This county is VERY gun friendly. I love living here.

Congrats on your move in the right direction, Phil. We fled Kalifornia in 2015. The not-so-Golden State is doomed. Liberals and Demon-RATS have ruined the state I was born in, and where I lived my entire life until we got the hell out of there. However, be advised that California will come after you in NV, especially if you just hopped across the border to Reno. The California tax thugs have a group that is tasked with investigating CA taxpayers who newly-claim to reside in Nevada, including making unannounced visits to your new address, and asking to see your pets. (If you had pets, then they would, of course, move with you, right?)

I hope you will find it refreshing to not have to wait 10 days for any/all firearms purchases, nor to be restricted to 1-gun-per-month (assuming that gun is on the Kalifornia-approved roster), nor to have to jump through other BS hoops to get ammo, standard capacity magazines, etc.

We have friends who still live in California, and stay there because they like the weather (assuming the air isn't brown/orange from wildfires due to decades of mismanaged forestry policy, and that they have power to use their A/C indoors), or that it's just too much work to move, etc. What is liberty worth? It's priceless!!

Staying in California will ensure you are subject to the Demon-RATS super-majority in the legislature, a govern-whore who makes Jerry (Moonbeam) Brown look like a moderate, a pair of hateful harridans as your US Senate "representation", just about the highest taxes (sales, gasoline, income) in the USA, millions of illegal aliens consuming your tax dollars because the lefties hate responsible/successful people who don't rely on the government for handouts in exchange for their vote, outrageous infringement of liberty and your 2nd Amendment Rights, crumbling infrastructure and unbelievably stupid transportation projects like the 'High Speed Rail' (can't call it a "bullet" train, so scary) that nobody will ride and won't even have the 1st pathetic phase done until 2033 at soonest, and the debacle that was the "New Bay Bridge" that took 24 years (!!!!) to build, triple the initial budget, is defective (thanks in part to Chinese steel), and the old bridge had been working just fine (and the section that fell apart in the 1989 earthquake was designed that way, and quickly repaired). And that just scratches the surface of the scabs of California. (Like walking through human feces and urine on public streets? Welcome to San Francisco!)

So, good move. I don't care how difficult it was, it was worth it. Staying in California is crazy if you believe liberty is paramount to a free country. But we're glad not everybody is leaving, because too many Californians relocate to other places and bring their California-tainted politics with them, explaining, for example why Austin is a liberal blight in Texas.

Good for you! Pursuit of happiness!! I believe it is GOD granted as well as constitutional!

I like to think you are right "Old Heli logger", there are a lot of good folks in Ca., but with the socialist commie's and Muslim's taking over and more fruitcakes following them, they are a dying breed in this communist society that is growing out of Sacramento and a lot of city governments.

California....beautiful place, mostly good folks, but run by a colossal bunch of completel libtards. I saw this back in 1975 when I left for good, and have never looked back. I've carried legally here since the day I left the communist state, can leave a store ten minutes after buying a handgun, and can go shoot on BLM land five minutes from the house any time I choose.

There ARE alternatives to being held hostage in CA.

55 years was enough. The only way it will work is to break it up into smaller states. If you exclude the LA and SF regions, California would be a very different place.

But such efforts, even going back as far as the 1980s, have always met with hysterical resistance within the government. Because they don't want to give up their power. California has about 40 million legal residents. And 2 Senate-whores. Wyoming has a bit less than 600k residents. And 2 Senators. Think about that!

You cannot defeat a system wherein the people in charge of the money (taxes) give it to others in exchange for their votes. It's a rigged game, and only getting worse. I wish you luck, but it's doomed. And be sure to wear your Muck boots when you are in San Francisco.
Please don't ever give up on any state, even California. I worked all over that state and there are a bunch of good God fearin folks that live there. I still think there's hope

What I liked most about the "old days" (my "old days") was that there was only about 2.5 billion people on the planet, which made hunting and fishing much more fun then.
I remember fly fishing the Yellowstone and people would ask us “What kind of fishing rod is that?” 1967 or 68? Used to walk out our back door after school to get a pheasant for dinner. I usually had one in under a 1/2 hour.:)
By the way, what state did you land in?
