Winchester modifies the WSM and creates the 6.8 Western

Kinda looks like it's half way between a Rem SAUM and Win WSM with a 35 degree shoulder angle like the WSM.

270 wsm came to my mind right away also. What is the difference here?
The new cartridge appears to be about .090" shorter than the .270 WSM. I don't know if it's all in shortening the neck or if any of the other dimensions are different also. It has the same 35 degree shoulder angle as the WSM case. With that short neck, a 175 grain bullet is going to intrude into the powder space unless it's really long throated.

Why not? A .270 WSM short. I'll bet it would really shine with 130-150 grain bullets, like both the .270 Win and .270 WSM. Maybe neck it up to 7mm or .308 for a new LR BR round.

Compared to 270 WSM, the 6.8 Western Case is shorter, but cartridge overall length is longer, rifling twist is faster, leade is longer. Did Winchester have to shorten the case in order to use longer bullets while still fitting a magazine spec length?

Dont forget the total failure rsaum. Few f class guys keep those alive
Doesn't the .284 Winchester pretty much mirror performance of the 7SAUM? Never really looked at the two closely.
We can add Ruger to the list with the RCM versions as well. Not even Ruger offers rifles chambered for them. The RCM case did spawn the 6.5PRC though and it really appears Hornady has the marketing horsepower and cooperation of rifle manufacturers to make a success of it.
