Winchester modifies the WSM and creates the 6.8 Western

Dont forget the total failure rsaum. Few f class guys keep those alive

How about the utterly forgettable Ruger Compact Magnum (RCM) of the same vintage? I can still find WSSM brass and ammo, even in today's climate.

NM, Shoot4fun beat me to the RCM reference...

6.5 SAUM and 6.5 PRC are sort of resuscitating the SAUM cases through GA Precision.

Compared to 270 WSM, the 6.8 Western Case is shorter, but cartridge overall length is longer, rifling twist is faster, leade is longer. Did Winchester have to shorten the case in order to use longer bullets while still fitting a magazine spec length?
I think this must be the case when running heavy bullets. I built a 270wsm to run heavies but had to build it on a LA to get the mag clearance. Since they're putting a 7.5 twist on the factory guns, I expect most loads will be heavy. Won't compete with a 270wsm and a fast twist barrel for throwing heavies, though.

To be honest I’m kind of intrigued. I’m looking at building a fast twist .277 hunting gun and was leaning heavily on a medium action or long action 270 wsm, but have some spare short actions around and would be kind of cool if I could do a bdl feeding 6.8. It seems to be about .085 thou shorter in the shoulder to allow for the longer bullets. I guess time will tel

it looks like they took the 270 WSM made very minor changes to it and renamed it. like they did with the 260 Rem morphing into the 6.5 screechmore

The 6.8 western is a 6.5 PRC necked up and shoulder bumped forward ~0.015". It's .53 diameter instead of .55 like the WSM family.

The cartridge isn't as interesting as the brass/case itself. I could see taking the brass and doing something different with it.... depending who ends up making brass for it.

7mm or 30 cal... time will tell where it goes... I havent seen a big "new brass" hit in a while. A brass design that fits a bigger gap between other things available would spark more interest to me..

Just seems like a hard market to put something new out thats really different and excels somehow in its niche.

Some of the rifle manufacturers are going to have to get behind this cartridge or it will die like so many others. Without manufacturing support in various models of rifles, we will be left with brass only since the market for ammunition will essentially dry up.
